SAN ANGELO, Texas — Ask Angelo State University head football coach Dale Carr and his players what the most memorable thing from last Saturday’s game at the Cotton Bowl was and you probably won’t get the answer you expect.
It wasn’t the size of the stadium. The Cotton Bowl was one of the largest venues the ASU program has ever played in. It wasn’t the victory over Texas A&M-Commerce. The Rams dominated the Lions, picked to win the Lone Star Conference North Division this year. It was the heat. And the humidity. And the combination of both.
“The venue was nice, but probably the overwhelming outside factor for the coaches and players was the heat,” Carr said. “But I thought our guys did a good job playing through it. I do think it caused some of the mistakes that we made. It played head games with our players, so to speak.”
The Rams did appear sluggish early in the game. They committed five penalties in the first quarter and couldn’t get anything going offensively.
“We started out sort of slow,” ASU defensive lineman Cody Smith said. “I think the humidity affected a bunch of people, and the heat.”

There’s nothing worse than chasing a quarterback play after play after play and never quite getting to him. That was the case for Midwestern State defensive end Kevin Birdow and the rest of the Mustangs defense last Saturday against Eastern New Mexico as they chased Greyhounds quarterback Wesley Wood for more than 60 plays on the night.
Add in the fact that ENMU runs a hurry-up offense that is ready to go as soon as the ball is set, and that Birdow spent most of the week in bed with a virus and a high temperature and it made things even tougher for the junior from Palestine.
“It was hell,” said Birdow, who returned to practice on Thursday and said he was ready to go on Saturday. “It was just a constant, relentless pass rush on every single play. I got a hand on him a couple times, but it was tough. He was a little faster than we anticipated.”
But rather than getting frustrated, it actually helped Birdow and the defensive front keep after the ENMU quarterback.
“It makes you want to keep on rushing,” he said, “because you still need and want to get him. It gives you a little extra incentive because you might get him the next time. If we keep up with our assignments up front, it makes it easier for everyone behind us.”

Usually, when a quarterback gets his receiver laid out - he throws a ball too high, for example, leaving his target vulnerable for a hard hit - the quarterback will hear about it in no uncertain terms from his receiver.
That was never the case, though, with West Texas A&M teammates Kendrick Cutsinger and Tanner Marsh. Their friendship was stronger than any vicious hit an opportunistic defensive back or linebacker could unleash.
Cutsinger, a sophomore tight end from Austin Westlake, died Sept. 3 in a vehicle accident in Llano County. Cutsinger, nicknamed "Cutty," was one of the more popular Buffs, known for his goofy sense of humor that endeared him to teammates of all backgrounds.
None knew him better than Marsh, a sophomore quarterback from Lewisville and the Buffs' primary backup and contender for the starting spot next season.

CORPUS CHRISTI — It is no wonder Texas A&M-Commerce has a 1-1 record coming into Saturday night’s Lone Star Conference crossover game at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Picked to claim the LSC North Division title for the second consecutive season, the Lions have covered both ends of the spectrum. They have started slow and rallied to win. They also have started fast and then faltered in coach Guy Morriss’ second season in Commerce.
A&M-Commerce scored 33 unanswered points in the second half to beat Upper Iowa 33-10 in its season opener. Last week, however, after taking the opening kickoff and driving for Ahmed Abo-Mahmood’s 22-yard field goal, the Lions disappeared offensively. Angelo State scored the next 24 points and rolled to a 31-10 LSC crossover victory at the Harvey Martin Classic at the Cotton Bowl.
Senior quarterback Adam Farkes has been a prime example of the Lions’ up-and-down nature through the first two ballgames. He has thrown for 490 yards with a 53-percent completion rate. He hasn’t thrown any touchdown passes, however, and has been intercepted five times. Last week against the Rams, Farkes was sacked seven times.

Coach thinks Lady Buffs 'getting better' - Ricky Treon, Amarillo Globe News
West Texas A&M Lady Buffs volleyball coach Jason Skoch expects a lot from his players.
On Friday and Saturday in Denver, Skoch made his players spend nearly every minute of their time focusing on volleyball at the Colorado Premier Challenge.
But after the hard work yielded a 1-3 record, Skoch let his team go to the water park Elitch Gardens to relax.
"We shut them off from everybody," Skoch said of the first few days of the trip. "But on Sunday, we let them just be kids. Basically telling them, do it our way, and we can have fun."

LSC Soccer: Men's powers collide as the women continue non-conference play - LSC Office
After two weeks of play, three men’s teams - Midwestern State, Incarnate Word and Northeastern State - each remain undefeated. On the women’s side, Abilene Christian and East Central both have a perfect records. Conference play begins on the men’s side this week with West Texas A&M matched up against Eastern New Mexico and No. 10 Incarnate Word at No. 2 Midwestern State in a battle of top-10 teams. The women continue with non-conference contests.

MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Paulo Teixeira, Midwestern State University, Sr., MF, Brockton, Mass., Brockton HS Teixeira tallied a goal and an assist at the Midwestern State Classic as he helped the third-ranked Mustangs to wins over Colorado State-Pueblo on Friday and Colorado-Colorado Springs on Sunday. The senior from Brockton, Mass., threaded a short through ball to David Freeland for the opening goal in the 20th minute Friday night against Colorado State-Pueblo, and then tapped in a short volley off of Tex McCullough’s throw-in in the 66th minute Sunday for the game winner over Colorado-Colorado Springs. Teixeira now has six goals and four assists since transferring to MSU from Massasoit College prior to his junior season.
MEN’S DEFENSIVE

Herrera notched his 15th career shutout while helping No. 3-ranked Mustangs to consecutive victories over the weekend at the Midwestern State Classic. The senior from Dallas made one save in a 4-0 win over Colorado State-Pueblo on Friday before stopping three shots in a 1-0 shutout of Colorado-Colorado Springs Sunday afternoon. Herrera has made six saves this season while posting 256-plus shutout minutes.
WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Whitney Watts, East Central University, Jr., F, North Richland Hills, Texas, Richland HS
Watts scored four goals - two in each match - and recorded an assist as ECU shut out Hendrix College 4-0 and University of the Ozarks 9-0. Watts also had an assist against Ozarks. She scored the first goal in each game. She now has five goals and a pair of assists for 12 points for the season.
WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Molly Hummel, East Central University, So., D, Dallas, Texas, J.J. Pearce HS
Hummel led an ECU defensive charge which allowed just eight total shots in two games combined as the Lady Tigers shut out Hendrix College 4-0 and University of the Ozarks 9-0. Hummel also managed to score a goal in the win over Ozarks.
WOMEN’S GOALKEEPER
Tori Puentes, University of the Incarnate Word, Jr., Las Cruces, NM, Las Cruces HS
Puentes made four saves in a 1-1 double-overtime tie against Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas.
