Women’s Soccer Begins 2010 Play. - LSC Scoop Staff
This past weekend marked the first matches of the 2010 season. It’s always interesting to see how each coach chooses to start their campaign. Will they play weak-sister schools to begin on a positive note (like most D1 football programs….Texas v Rice…. Really?) or schedule strong programs to gain those Regional points? Predictably, the stronger programs choose the latter path . Conference play begins as early as Sept 22, so now is the time to see how your team will jell, experiment with the playing combinations and see if those Freshmen can hang at this level.
ACU – Took a successful swing through Colorado and came away with two wins over (middle to lower quality) RMAC teams. Defeated U Colorado-Colorado Springs 3-0 on Thursday and CSU-Pueblo 2-0 on Saturday. Started five true freshmen in both games. For the first time ever the Cats did not bring in transfers to bolster the ranks. The program, in their fourth year, has a handful of players who have been involved since inception, and evidently the decision has been made to grow their own players. Next weekend a trip to San Antonio to test St Marys.
Angelo St – Journeyed to Emporia Kansas for the Emporia State Invitational. Tied Emporia State 0-0 (pre-season#9 MIAA) and scratched out a 1-0 win against Missouri Western (#5 pre-season MIAA). The Rambelles look to improve their status in the LSC after a couple of down years. Angelo hosts their Invitational this weekend, with UTPB and two RMAC teams, Adams State and CSU-Pueblo rounding out the field.
Central Oklahoma – Hosted the Broncho Invitational, and invited fellow LSC member Midwestern and two strong MIAA teams, Nebraska-Omaha (pre-season #2 MIAA) and Truman (#1 MIAA and 24th nationally). Defeated Nebraska 2-1 and fell to Truman 1-2. The Broncos continue hosting this weekend bringing in perennial power St Edwards and local competition Oklahoma City U. Midwestern returns for the second weekend of play. Oklahoma City U will regret accepting the invitation to this party.
East Central U- Took the trip alongside Angelo to Emporia Kansas, and enjoyed two weekend wins, against Missouri Western 3-2 (OT) and Emporia State 2-0. Next weekend the Tigers travel to Arkansas for matches with U of the Ozarks and Hendrix (DIII).
Eastern New Mexico University – Bravely scheduled St Edwards in Austin and were rewarded with a 1-5 defeat. The Hilltoppers recorded 20 shots to 2 for the Zia’s. This week University of the Southwest and New Mexico Highlands should prove to be more friendly to ENMU, before they face Fort Lewis (#1 RMAC) on Sunday.
Midwestern – Trekked to Edmond and came back with two wins over quality opponents. Handed #24 Truman a 3-2 defeat on Friday and Nebraska-Omaha a 2-1 defeat on Sunday. The Mustangs came from behind twice against Truman before providing the winner. Both the goals in the Nebraska game were in the same minute. The box score indicates a gap of five seconds between the goals (five seconds, how is that even possible?). Again in Edmond this weekend the Mustangs will face St Edwards ( a worthy opponent) and Oklahoma City U. (?)
Northeastern State University- Already displaying the MIAA logo on their website, the Riverhawks are evidently more than ready to leave the LSC. Friday Missouri Southern visited Tahlequah and left with a 1-0 defeat. Sunday in Maryville MO a 1-1 draw resulted from a match with Northwest Missouri. This weekend games against lightweight A&M International and St Marys await the Riverhawks in Texas.
Southwest Oklahoma State – Opened the 2010 campaign with a pair of losses in San Antonio. A&M International defeated the Bulldogs 3-2 and St Marys prevailed in a 3-1 match. 2009 was the Bulldogs best showing in recent years and we hoped to see that trend carry over into the 2010 campaign. This weekend opponents are Northwest Oklahoma and New Mexico Highlands.
Texas Women’s University – Opened with a couple of quality opponents in Central Missouri and Rollins. Unfortunately both matches ended in losses. This week brings a trip to Colorado to test Colorado School of Mines and Colorado Christian.
Texas A&M Commerce- Opened with a 1-0 win again Tusculum. This week brings matches against Dallas Baptist and Newman.
University of Incarnate Word – Opened with arguably the toughest first-weekend matches in the LSC, losing to #10 Metro State of Denver 2-3 and notching a 2OT win over #7 Colorado School of Mines 2-1. Next weekend finds the Cardinals trying Washburn. UIW is going to struggle in the football-crazy LSC on the gridiron, but their soccer programs are going to raise the bar. With the recent domination of women’s soccer by West Texas, Midwestern and Central Oklahoma, and the addition of UIW, the other eight LSC schools are effectively playing for the remaining two tournament berths. Could be interesting.
West Texas A&M – Although technically we have a coaching change in the program, handing the reins over to a long-term assistant will not affect the Buffs one little bit. WT kept their successes from 2009 going by spanking #13 Rollins 3-0 and defeating Tusculum by the same score. Next weekend finds the RMAC #1 pre-season favorite Fort Lewis in Canyon.

LSC SOCCER
The Lone Star Conference soccer teams kicked off their seasons this past week. Much of the competition was against other nationally ranked Division II teams. Combined the women outscored their opponents 44-28 to bring home 14 wins. The men went 6-3 with 29 goals last week.

MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Callum Riley, University of Incarnate Word, Jr., MF, Lutterworth, England
A major reason why the Cardinals are ranked No. 13 in the nation is thanks to Riley. In the team’s first game of the season, Riley scored three goals (the first on a penalty kick) to lead Incarnate Word to a 4-1 victory over Rollins College - knocking the Tars out of the Top 25 from the 10th spot, and propelling the unranked Cardinals to a ranking of 13th. Riley’s shooting percentage is a perfect 100% and he has put the ball in the net half the times he has taken aim on the goal.
MEN’S DEFENSIVE
Chris Fidler, University of Incarnate Word, Jr., GK, Stockport, England
Taking over as the starting goalie for the Cardinals, Fidler has helped Incarnate Word score two victories against formerly-ranked teams in Rollins College and The University of Tampa.
WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Samantha Cameron, West Texas A&M University, Fr., F, Amarillo, Texas/ Amarillo HS
Cameron provided the main offensive firepower for the Lady Buffs during the weekend, scoring three goals in two matches for a total of six points. The freshman also held a perfect 1.000 shot-on-goal percentage, taking only three shots with all three falling in goal. She netted her first goal in her collegiate game debut against No. 13 Rollins and scored a pair of goals in the Sept. 6 shutout of Tusculum both on a breakaway.
WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Karli Maxey, Angelo State University, So., D, Amarillo, Texas / Amarillo HS
Maxey was a cornerstone to the Angelo State defense this past week. The sophomore helped lead the ‘Belles to a 1-0-1 record without allowing a goal in 200 minutes of action.
WOMEN’S GOALKEEPER
Elliott London, Abilene Christian University, Jr., GK, Austin, Texas/ Lake Travis HS
Replacing all-LSC goalie, Crissy Lawson, London helped move her record and the Wildcats to 2-0 in the soccer’s opening weekend. London got the start in both victories recording 12 saves over the weekend including eight crucial saves in a win over CSU-Pueblo. Recording all but 17 minutes in the opener at UC-Colorado Springs, London got credit for the second shutout on Saturday in a 2-0 win over CSU-Pueblo.
