Women’s Soccer Weekly Update.
Two LSC teams are listed in the nation’s top 25 for this week, #19 West Texas A&M and #25 Midwestern. Florida Southern only fell from #12 to #15 after narrowly defeating ACU in overtime and losing to Texas A&M-Commerce? We’re still scratching our head over that.

Conference play begins this week, with A&M Commerce and Texas Women’s facing off this afternoon in Denton. Most other members open conference play this weekend.
ACU. Lost to Florida Southern 3-2 in overtime on Saturday. ACU’s keeper will have nightmares about the overtime goal for a while. On Tuesday the Cats travelled to Odessa and blanked UTPB 3-0 with all three goals coming in the second half. Friday opens conference play against #25 Midwestern in Abilene. The Wildcats will be trying to turn the corner on 2009’s results when the Mustangs beat ACU 3-0 as the final game of the regular season and six days later beat them again 2-1 in overtime at the conference tourney.
Angelo State. Last Thursday the Rambelles dropped a 1-2 decision to UTPB in Odessa. Angelo scored in the 34th minute and led 1-0 at half. The Falcons tied it up in the 59th minute and scored again 2 minutes later for the win. Saturday versus DBU Angelo produced a win with a 72nd minute goal that stood. This weekend at home the Rambelles face conference foe UIW and Sunday St Edwards comes to town. It’s going to be a tough weekend for the Angelo State side.
Central Oklahoma. Friday the Bronchos dispatched St Mary’s 2-1 with two first half goals. University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma was the next victim as the Bronchs were very efficient, scoring four goals on just ten shots. Tuesday the Bronchos could not find the net against DBU and dropped a 1-3 decision, while outshooting the Patriots 17-8 and having an advantage on corners by a margin of 10. Sunday Southwestern Oklahoma provides the first conference match at Weatherford.
East Central. Friday the Tigers tied USAO 3-3 through 2 OT’s, and then fell to St Mary’s on Sunday 0-2. Sunday the Tigers welcome Northeastern to Ada for the conference opener for both schools.
Midwestern. The Mustangs defeated Newman 2-0 at home with two early goals. Midwestern re-appeared in the national rankings coming in at #25. This Friday in Abilene open conference play at ACU. This should be a great match for the fans. Midwestern has not allowed more than 9 shots in any match thus far, and ACU leads the conference in shots per match at 18.
Northeastern. Suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of Drury 1-2. Defeated Harding 2-1 Tuesday evening in a match that featured 31 fouls. Next Tuesday faces conference foe ECU.
ENMU. Rolled over Wayland Baptist 6-1 and lost to Lubbock Christian 1-0. The match with LCU tallied a total of 33 fouls between the two teams. Thursday the Zia’s face UTPB and open conference play next Tuesday against WT A&M.
Incarnate Word. Defeated UT-Brownsville 4-1. Today face St Eds, Friday open conference play against Angelo State, and face UTPB on Sunday.
A&M-Commerce. Defeated Harding 2-0 on Friday and #12 Florida Southern 2-1 on Sunday. Wednesday against TWU marks the initial match of the LSC play in Denton. A weekend trip to Florida awaits the Lions, facing Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday and Rollins on Sunday.
West Texas A&M. A match against #6 St Eds ended in a 2-2 2OT draw. Thursday DBU travels to Canyon for a match, before St Mary’s comes on Sunday. Tuesday (9.28) ENMU opens conference play in Canyon.
TWU. Friday lost to N Alabama 2-4, before dropping a 0-1 decision to St Eds. The Pioneers find themselves with a record at this point of 1-5 – I’m guessing this is the best 1-5 team in our region. Their pre-conference schedule has been brutal and will serve them well into conference play. Today begin conference play against the Lions of Commerce before a match next Tuesday against DBU.
SWOSU. Friday defeated Newman 2-1, and suffered a 0-4 shutout against Oklahoma City U. The Bulldogs managed only one shot in the Tuesday match. Friday the opponent is Southern Nazarene before Central Oklahoma opens conference play on Sunday.
Florida Southern finds LSC less than gracious hosts
Women’s Soccer.
Florida Southern brought their shiny new #12 national ranking to the Lone Star state last Thursday. After a narrow OT win over ACU and a loss to A&M-Commerce, the Moccasins returned to Florida Sunday and will most certainly drop out of the national rankings this week.
Florida Southern competes in the historically strong Sunshine State Conference. The current top 25 D2 poll has three conference members included – Rollins at #8, Florida Southern at #12, and Florida Tech at #23.
Saturday the Moccasins were in Abilene testing ACU. FSU got on the board early when Dallas native Princess Hailey found the net in the 6th minute, but ACU controlled play for the remainder of the half, outshooting FSU 9-3. There were three clearances off the goal line by FSU’s sweeper, as the Moc’s keeper struggled. Andrea Carpenter scored for the Cats in the 20th minute and Ashley Holton scored off a corner kick in the 31st to give ACU a 2-1 halftime lead. The second half of the match was a completely different game, with ACU seemingly content to sit on their lead. FSU scored the equalizer in the 84th to bring it to 2-2, and regulation time expired with that score. FSU launched a long kickoff into the penalty area to begin OT, where the ball was mishandled by ACU’s GK and trickled into the net for the winner. ACU fans and players alike were stunned while the Moc’s celebrated their good fortune. The goal came 7 seconds into the OT period.
In Commerce on Sunday FSU was handed their first loss of the season by the Lions, who improved to 4-1 with the win. The Lion side scored in the 20th minute to take a 1-0 lead at the intermission. FSU converted a corner into a goal just three minutes into the second half to equalize. Chelsea Haight scored her second goal of the match in the 72nd for the winner. There were a total of six yellow cards issued in the match, with three earned by each team.
While we don’t want to read too much into these results, any win over a ranked opponent is a good thing. ACU also gave the Moc’s all they wanted before the flukey goal produced a win for FSU. We’d like to think, of course, that this shows the increasing strength of the LSC soccer programs. Unfortunately the travel expense prevents much interplay between LSC teams and power teams on both coasts, but to get our local teams national attention is going to take these types of matches.

With conference play underway for the men, No. 2 Midwestern State remains undefeated. Four of the five men’s teams have only lost one game or less through week three. The LSC women begin conference play this week with six head-to-head matches. Nine of the women’s teams have recorded a winning record so far with a combined total of 21 shutouts.

MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Andy Wilkinson, Eastern New Mexico University, Fr., F, Lewes, East Sussex, England, Sussex Downs
Andy Wilkinson netted the game-winning goal with 2:44 remaining in a 2-1 win over West Texas A&M, lifting the Greyhounds to their fifth win in their first six games. The goal was his second game winner of the season.
MEN’S DEFENSIVE
Ryan Spence, Midwestern State University, Jr., D, Decatur, Texas, Decatur HS
Spence headed in his second collegiate goal in Sunday’s 6-1 win over St. Edward’s but enjoyed a stellar weekend directing traffic on Midwestern State’s back line. The junior returning All American organized a defense which allowed just four harmless shots with none falling on goal in the opening half as the Mustangs built 4-0 and 3-0 leads on No. 10 Incarnate Word and St. Edward’s on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Chelsey Haight, Texas A&M University - Commerce, Sr., F, Granbury, Texas, Granbury HS
Scored twice in the Lions’ 2-1 win over No. 12 Florida Southern. She scored both the game-winning goals against Harding (Sept. 17) and against the Moccasins (Sept. 19). For her career, she has 10 game-winning goals. Haight also played a role in creating opportunities for her teammates throughout the week, including junior Devon Herrman, who scored a goal and assisted on Haight’s goal against Harding.
WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Cassidy Ballantyne, University of the Incarnate Word, Sr., D, Albuquerque, NM, Sandia HS
Ballantyne helped limit the UT-Brownsville offense to just four shots in last Thursday’s 4-1 victory. The lone goal against UIW came on a penalty kick.
WOMEN’S GOALKEEPER
Randi Hafele, Texas A&M University - Commerce, Jr., GK, Friendswood, Texas, Clear Brook HS
She made a season-high eight saves in the Lions’ 2-1 win over No. 12 Florida Southern. Hafele recorded her third shutout of the season with two saves in the 2-0 win over Harding on Sept. 17.
