West Texas A&M Student-Athlete Killed in Vehicle Accident
WTAMU football player killed, former soccer player seriously injured
CANYON, Texas – A West Texas A&M football student-athlete was killed and a former soccer student-athlete was critically injured Friday afternoon in a vehicular accident in Llano County, Texas, according to Texas Department of Public Safety officials.
Kendrick Cutsinger, from Austin (Texas) Westlake was killed in the incident. Cutsinger was currently a junior tight end for the Buffaloes’ football team.
Julio Rada-Moya, an international student from Venezuela, was critically injured. Rada was a member of the 2009 Buff men’s soccer program.
According to DPS Trooper Scott Jendrzey, Cutsinger was driving down a two-lane highway toward Austin when he over corrected on a big left-hand curve. Cutsinger’s truck rolled and both passengers were thrown from the vehicle. Jendrzey said neither Cutsinger or Rada-Moya were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. Cutsinger was pronounced dead at the scene, and Rada-Moya was transferred to a hospital in Breckenridge where he remains in critical condition.
"As a University, we are deeply saddened by the loss of Kendrick Cutsinger and want to express our heartfelt sympathy to his family and loved ones," said WTAMU President Dr. J. Patrick O’Brien. "His leadership on the field and in the classroom will be missed."
"The injuries to Julio Rada-Moya are significant," O’Brien continued. "We will keep him in our prayers. Rada-Moya is an international student from Venezuela, and we will continue to work with him and his family to ensure that his recovery and recuperation are surrounded by the love and support of the University community.
"Both of these young men chose West Texas A&M University as the place to continue their education and explore their futures. We take our responsibility to nurture and protect our students seriously, and it hurts us deeply when we experience such unexpected loss and sadness as this."

SAN ANGELO, Texas — San Angelo Stadium might bear a resemblance to the Wild West tonight when Angelo State hosts Eastern New Mexico.
The Lone Star Conference crossover contest, the season opener for ASU, might turn into an old-fashioned shootout.
Last year’s game between the two teams in Portales, N.M., did and indications point to the same possibility this time as well.
A year ago, the teams combined for 1,030 yards in ASU’s 47-23 victory. Rams quarterback Josh Neiswander passed for 403 yards while ENMU’s J.J. Harp threw for 393.
Some of the faces have changed, more on the Greyhounds’ side than the Rams’, but both teams still feature the same potent offenses that produced last year’s high-scoring affair.
“I am pretty excited about the first game and I am pretty sure everybody else is too,” ASU head coach Dale Carr said.

A few Lone Star Conference schools opened their season last Saturday but the 2010 campaign really gets going this weekend with all but one South Division team in action.
Four teams from the South opened their season Thursday night. A couple of the outcomes were surprising — and that may be an understatement.
Texas A&M-Kingsville, the No. 14 team in the National Football Coaches Association poll, upset No. 1 and defending national champion Northwest Missouri State 16-7.
Nate Poppell threw for 258 yards and a touchdown and ran for a TD in his first game at quarterback while the Javelinas shut down an NWMSU offense that returned 10 starters from a team that averaged 42 points and 474 yards of offense en route to the NCAA Division II title last season.
“We just came out here and wanted to hit them in the mouth and show them who’s boss,” TAMUK sophomore defensive end Matt Romig, who had three sacks, told the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. “That was our whole game plan. We just played disciplined football and struck first.”

What’s riding on this game: This is a big game between two playoff contenders in Super Regional Four. The loser will have little room for error the rest of the way. Last year, both teams finished 8-3 in the region. ACU got the sixth and final playoff berth, while Washburn, ranked No. 7 in the region, stayed home. So what made the difference? ACU beat Northwest Missouri State in the season opener while Washburn lost to the eventual national champions in overtime later that season.
“This is huge,” ACU coach Chris Thomsen said. “Last year, we were sixth and they were seventh. It was a decimal point on the computer as to why we went (to the playoffs). They’re a perennial top 25 playoff-caliber team. So it’s a huge game.”

PORTALES — It’s been nearly four years since the Eastern New Mexico University football team has beaten a Lone Star Conference South Division opponent.
Senior wide receiver Jessie Poku, who last week broke the school’s career pass receptions record, figures it’s about time for that to end.
The Greyhounds, now members of the North Division, take a 19-game losing streak against the South into today’s 5 p.m. (MDT) crossover contest against Angelo State at San Angelo, Texas.
Armed with some confidence after last week’s season-opening 59-21 blowout of Southern Nazarene, Poku said the Hounds are anxious for this week’s challenge. ENMU’s last LSC South win was 37-14 over Texas Texas A&M-Kingsville on Oct. 28, 2006.
“I’m really stressing this year that we live every down and every play as if it’s our last,” said Poku, who had 10 catches and scored three touchdowns against SNU and now has 137 grabs in four seasons. “I want to bury every single team we play because I’m tired of everybody looking at Eastern like it’s the bottom of the barrel.”
