2009 Preview - Central Oklahoma

2008 Review
One of the easiest ways to see what a team is made of is to watch how they react to adversity. Coming into 2008 fresh off a coaching change and NCAA infractions, things looked bleak for the Bronchos. Week 1 would see them barely lose to Pitt State, 16-12. The next 3 weeks were even harder, losing to West Texas, Tarleton, and A&M-Kingsville by a total score of 132-41. With their season seemingly over, they ended up going 7-0 down the stretch and undefeated in the LSC North. The Bronchos showed incredible fight on their way to an LSC North title.

The Broncho offense would improve as the season progressed, but still was not that dominant. While they finished 6th in the LSC in points per game (24.8), they were only 10th best in the LSC in yards per game (304 per game) and rushing offense (79 yards per game). QB Brandon Noohi came on and had a good season, finishing with 1,900+ yards, 11 TD’s and only 3 interceptions. He also ran for 8 TD’s and was named the LSC North Offensive Player of the Week 5 times during the Broncho 7-game winning streak.

Central Oklahoma’s defense ranked somewhere between 6th and 9th in the conference in Points Allowed, Yardage Allowed, Rushing Defense and Pass Defense Efficiency. Their Pass Defense did struggle however, finishing 12th in the conference at 265 yards per game. DT Jermelle Cudjo had an outstanding season, voted to the 1st Team LSC Defense for the 2nd year in a row. LB’s Freddie Harris and Terry Hardeman also had good seasons, making 2nd team LSC North.

Big Games
@ Pitt State
@ West Texas
@ A&M-Kingsville
Vs. Tarleton

Best Case Scenario
8-3 Noohi continues to improve and not turn the ball over, a healthy Ben Birmingham provides the Bronchos with a steady running game to keep the pressure off of Noohi, and they feed off of a REALLY tough early schedule

Worst Case Scenario
4-7 The early season schedule crushes them like in 2008, but they can’t rebound in a similar fashion. The defense continues to be average/below average, and all of the losses to graduation catch up with them. The 4 “Big Games” are their first 4 games of the season, and still face Midwestern later in the season. This is a brutal schedule.
