OT Webb could be next Buff to turn pro
The breakfast menu Friday morning for West Texas A&M offensive lineman J'Marcus Webb consisted of a banana, a bowl of oatmeal, an energy bar and a bowl of cereal.

It was among 10 to 12 times Webb ate Friday.

At 6-foot-8 and 320 pounds, Webb - the largest of the Buffs with size-22 feet - has to chow like Kobayashi at a hot dog stand just to maintain his weight.
"My metabolism is pretty fast," Webb shrugged. "I gotta eat like that."

Wouldn't most people love to have that problem?

Webb is known for more than his prowess at the buffet table, though. The senior from Mesquite, where he was a Parade All-America, played in 12 games as a true freshman offensive tackle at the University of Texas in 2006. In 2007, Webb left UT for Navarro Junior College, where he was a first-team NJCAA All-America.

MSU special teams rounding into shape
Many times coaches will say the final outcome will come down to the kicking game.

The Midwestern State Mustangs have just about all aspects of the kicking game under control — although they are still a little iffy with the punter.

Former Hirschi standout Jose Martinez returns to handle PATs and field goals, while Lee Scott is back to take care of kickoffs and long field goals.

Head coach Bill Maskill is glad to have both kickers back, but would like to see a little more consistency.

“Everyday one of these guys has really shined during practice,” he said. “Unfortunately, it’s not the same one everyday. Jose has been a little inconsistent, but then he’s been consistent in the past. His big problem is if he hurries too much or tries to go too fast. It’s not the pressure of the kick. If he takes his time and gets set, he’s usually OK.

“Lee has looked real good. He’s going to handle the kickoffs and any field goal longer than 42 yards unless there’s wind behind us.”

ACU-Northwest game will be on KRBC, Fox Sports Southwest
Fox Sports Southwest and Fox Sports Houston will pick up the CBS College Sports national feed and carry Abilene Christian University’s season-opening football game Thursday.

The Wildcats, ranked No. 5 in the American Football Coaches Association national Division II poll, play No. 2 Northwest Missouri State at 7 p.m. Thursday at Shotwell Stadium.

For local fans who do not have either CBS College Sports or Fox Sports Southwest, KRBC is going to pull the feed over from CBS College Sports and air the game locally.


ACU soccer preview: Keeper did job but 'Cats need more scoring punch
Abilene Christian goal keeper Crissy Lawson was under a lot of pressure last season to be nearly perfect — pretty much an impossible task.

But the Mesa College (San Diego) transfer was pretty darn good in her first season with the Wildcats. Lawson had 106 saves, third best in the Lone Star Conference, and posted five shutouts — just one shy of the LSC leader, Texas A&M-Commerce’s Taylor Jordan.

It’s little wonder ACU was one of the stingiest teams in the LSC — giving up only 17 goals in 19 games (0.89 per game). Only A&M-Commerce was better, allowing 17 goals in 23 games (0.74).

However, ACU did little to make things easier on Lawson. The Wildcats ranked 10th out of 11 teams in the LSC in goals scored last year, scoring 22 goals in 19 games (1.16 per game).

MSU announces 2009-10 hoops signing class
Midwestern State men’s basketball coach Grant McCasland announced his initial recruiting class for the 2009-10 season.

“We’ve added a group that will make a significant impact,” he said. “As a group, all of them have played in winning programs and will add quality depth to a strong core of returning players.”

The class consists of three guards and a forward, including three with NCAA Division I experience.

No. 5 MSU makes short work of Southern Nazarene
No. 5 Midwestern State scored three quick goals in the second half to put away Southern Nazarene 4-0 Friday night in exhibition play at the MSU Soccer Field.

“We had a better second half, but we really got after them after the second goal,” MSU coach Doug Elder said.

Senior forward Kyle Kmiec’s goal in the 9th minute on a through ball from Brian Martinez gave the Mustangs the early lead as they dominated the first half to the tune of 11 shots to none, but only managed to put three on goal.

“We’re starting to play to the level of our opponent,” Elder said. “They didn’t take it to us and took it a little slow, so we started to do the same. We don’t play well like that.”
