2009 Preview - Southeastern Oklahoma

2008 Recap
Last season was a tale of two seasons for the Savage Storm. They started the season 1-4, and their 4 losses were by an average score of 50-13. After that rough stretch, they would finish the season going 5-1 during the final 6 games, and finished 2nd in the LSC North. Their only loss in the north was to Central Oklahoma. They were able to win close games against Southwestern (8 pts), A&M-Commerce (4 pts) and East Central (7 points).

SOSU’s offense finished up the season with very average numbers. Their passing offense (211 yds per game), rushing offense (96 yds per game), scoring offense (22 pts per game) and total offense (307 yds per game) all finished either 8th or 9th in the conference. RB Baylen Laury would finish the season averaging just under 70 yards per game (6th in the LSC). QB Brandon McCain had a pretty good season though, finishing with 195 passing yards per game (6th in the LSC) and #3 in the conference with a 140 Passing Efficiency. Daniel Nichols’ 73 receiving yards per game put him at #7 in the conference.

The Savage Storm defense didn’t do much to help out the cause either. They were #10 in the LSC in scoring defense (30 pts per game), #11 in total defense (392 yds per game), rushing defense was #12 (140 yds per game), and the pass defense was #8 (252 yds per game). They gave up 51 points to Tarleton, 59 pts to ACU, 63 pts to Northwestern State, and 41 pts to UCO. They only held 3 teams to 20 or less points all year. Bernard Daniel finished the season with 78 tackles, Noe Lopez followed with 72, and Cameron Sparks had 70.

Big Games
vs. Henderson State
vs. Central Oklahoma
vs. A&M-Commerce

Best Case Scenario
8-3 Somehow the QB position (Pitrucha?) gets massive production and hit’s the ground running early on in the schedule. All of the returning players improve. The defense finds a groove and helps take pressure off of the glaring issue at QB.

Worst Case Scenario
4-7 The QB position either takes a long time to get rolling, or never does at all. The offense continues their struggle from last season, and the defense plays the same way it did last year. Early games against Midwestern and ACU knock them off track and they have trouble rebounding.
