Carthel's 5th anniversary at WT
West Texas A&M head football coach Don Carthel has a saying whenever he needs to motivate his team - "Coach 'em up."
In the past five years, Carthel has coached up the Buffs, indeed.
It is difficult to imagine now, but five years ago last week when Carthel was hired as WT's 26th head coach, the Buffs were not exactly a national power.
WT had three winning seasons in 17 years and hadn't hoisted a conference championship trophy since 1986. It got so bad, the football program was disbanded for a season - 1991 - which was ironically the same year Carthel left Eastern New Mexico, his last collegiate head coaching job before WT came calling.
My how things have changed in Canyon in five years.
