LSC Baseball Championship: ACU wins LSC Baseball Championship
The eight-team field has been determined for this week’s Lone Star Conference Softball Championship, which will be played over three days at the Durant Multi-Sports Complex in Durant, Okla., starting on Thursday, May 6.
League action wrapped up last week with West Texas A&M sweeping its conference series, while Northeastern State won three of four games in the North Division and Texas Woman’s and Tarleton State took two of three contests in the South.
LSC softball teams are 399-313 overall, with a 201-160 mark in the South and 198-153 in the North this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the women’s teams are currently 95-35 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 38-23 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).
Players of the Week
NORTH HITTER
Hillary Hughes, East Central, Sr., Second Baseman, Ringling, Okla./Ringling HS
Hughes hit .545 (6-for-11) for the week with a pair of doubles and four runs batted in as ECU split a four-game series with Cameron and earned a spot in the LSC Championship Tournament. Hughes helped extend her playing career in the season finale as she went 3-for-3 with a two-run double, which proved to be the game-winner, in a 7-1 win over the Aggies.
NORTH PITCHER
Rachael Steverson, Central Oklahoma, So., Pitcher, Yukon, Okla./Yukon HS
Steverson had a dominating week in the circle against Southeastern Oklahoma, finishing with a 0.00 earned run average while picking up both wins as the teams split a four-game series. The sophomore pitched in all four games, giving up 11 hits in 15.0 innings while walking just three and striking out 17. Stevenson threw a seven-hit complete-game shutout in a 1-0 win in the series opener while walking one and striking out seven and then picked up a win in relief in a 4-2 nine-inning victory four days later, giving up three hits and a walk to go with four strikeouts. She allowed one hit and one walk while fanning five in five innings of relief work in two close losses.
SOUTH HITTER
Kimberly LeComte, West Texas A&M, So., Outfielder, Boerne, Texas/Boerne HS
LeComte ended the regular season with a 10-for-11 performance at the plate as West Texas A&M clinched the South Division title. The sophomore outfielder hit .909 last week, scored seven runs and drove in an impressive 12 RBIs with eight extra base hits including four doubles and four home runs, with a grand slam. She ended the three-game stretch with a 2.364 slugging percentage and a .909 on-base percentage. In game one against Abilene Christian, LeComte belted a pair of doubles and launched a pair of home runs past the fences at Lady Buff Yard to ensure the 15-1 run-rule victory. She continued to impress as she tallied a double and a home run in both the other games of the series. The sophomore centerfielder leads the team with a .834 slugging percentage, runs scored (61), home runs(20), RBIs (65), doubles (15), total bases (156) and has a perfect stolen base percentage tallying 19 stolen bases in 19 attempts. With 20 home runs, LeComte is tied for first in the NCAA Division II softball standings for most home runs hits this season.
SOUTH PITCHER
Julie Norris, Tarleton State, Sr., P, Garland, Texas, South Garland HS
Norris helped the TexAnns get the two wins they needed this week against Texas A&M-Kingsville to advance to the Lone Star Conference Championship. Norris was 2-0 with a 0.50 earned run average as she pitched 14.0 innings and allowed just one earned run with three walks and 11 strikeouts. The Javelinas hit .214 off the TexAnn senior.

Texas City grad Aprea Booker signed a letter of intent to play college basketball at Division II Texas A&M-Commerce. Booker played the past two seasons at Blinn Junior College. Booker averaged 3.7 points and 3.5 rebounds for Blinn this season.
There were plenty of options for Coleman Furst when it came to where he would play college basketball. Before, during and after his senior season, it seemed like a new school was trying to convince him to join their program.
And while for a majority of the year he wanted to play for a Division I school, Furst found a fit with a Division II powerhouse when he signed a national letter of intent on Tuesday morning to play for Tarleton State University.
"As it got closer, the meaning of Division I or Division II, I was just looking for the perfect it," Furst said.
The senior guard chose the Texans over The Citadel, West Texas A&M, Texas A&M-Commerce and Collin County College.
Weese Adds Lockney Longhorn to Roster for Upcoming Season
PORTALES, N.M. - Eastern New Mexico University women's basketball coach Linden Weese has announced the signing of Malory Johnson (F, 5-11, Plainview, Texas/Lockney HS) to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Zias in the 2010-11 season. Johnson was a highly decorated player for the Longhorns last season, garnering all-region, All-South Plains, Texas Girls Coaches Association all-state and was the team's Most Valuable Player.
W. Basketball: Women's basketball Adds Trio to 2010-11 Roster
DURANT, Okla. Southeastern will add three more incoming freshmen to the 2010-11 roster, with a pair of Texas players in Natalie Ruud and Christina Jack, and a local Oklahoma player in Hailey Schaefer.
