LSC Academic Awards announced
Angelo State’s Brian Holik and Sara Hooker were named Lone Star Conference Academic Athletes of the Year on Wednesday when league officials announced the LSC’s annual academic awards for men’s and women’s track and field.Holik was joined by 10 other track and field standouts on the LSC Men’s All-Academic Team, while Hooker, who earned her second straight academic athlete of the year honor, led a group of 11 stars on the LSC Women’s All-Academic Team.
In addition to the 22 men and women on the All-Academic Teams, 21 more student-athletes were recognized on the LSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average and have reached sophomore status both athletically and academically. The Academic Player of Year award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league’s sports information directors voting on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement. All qualifying student-athletes not selected for the All-Academic Team are then named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
On the men’s team with Holik was teammates Clinton Bippert and Wade Goode, Eastern New Mexico’s Bill Squire and Guy Kcholi, Texas A&M-Commerce’s Brandon Womack, Tyler Tyndell and Robert Reed, Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Daniel Castro and Abilene Christian’s Aaron Cantrell and Landon Ehlers.
Joining with Hooker on the Women’s All-Academic Team were fellow Rambelles Cathyrn Rittenberry, Brittney Heath, Andria Nussey and Kris Crockett, ACU’s Kim Prather, Elizabeth Buyse and Jessica Withrow, TAMUK’s Erica Alvarado and Jessica Martinez and ENMU’s Nicole Reid

Russell Signs with Javelinas
KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – Judson High School senior guard Tevin Russell has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his basketball career for Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Russell, a 6-3 guard from San Antonio, led Judson to a school record 69 wins over the past two seasons. As a junior, he was a key scorer off the bench in helping the Rockets to a school best 36-2 record while being named All-District 26-5A Honorable Mention. He averaged 4.1 points per game while shooting 61.3 percent from the field.
During his senior year, Russell averaged 11.1 points per game for a team that held opponents to a state best 44.8 points per game. He led the Rockets to an Elite Eight finish and a final ranking of #9 in the TABC statewide poll. He shot 40.8 percent from three-point range and knocked down 81.3 percent of his foul shots. He also chipped in 4.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. He earned TABC All-Region and First Team All-District 27-5A honors.
“We really like his potential and athletic ability,” said Javelina head coach Pete Peterson. “He has a great willingness to learn and work hard and has a bright future ahead of him if he can continue to do that. He comes from a great high school program and brings a winning attitude.”
Russell is an honor roll student and earned membership on the TABC Academic All-State team.
