Javelinas' Dean done for season with torn ACL - George Vondracek, Corpus Christi Caller Times
The knee injury suffered in last Saturday's football game is going to cost Texas A&M-Kingsville wide receiver Delashaun Dean the final five games of his senior season.
The transfer from Arizona damaged his left knee after completing a 48-yard catch-and-run on the third play from scrimmage in the Javelinas' 28-21 victory at Angelo State. An MRI on Monday revealed significant damage to the joint that will require surgery, which tentatively is scheduled for next week once swelling reduces in the knee.
"It's not the final reading but he's not going to be back," A&M-Kingsville coach Bo Atterberry said Tuesday. "I don't know exactly all the specifics but based on the initial evaluation he won't be back."
Dean said the MRI revealed he tore his anterior cruciate ligament, the meniscus and a grade 2 tear of his medial collateral ligament.
Dean was running a post pattern and caught the pass from quarterback Nate Poppell. As Dean accelerated, he was dragged down from behind by ASU cornerback Husani Sallah and, in the process, the left knee bent backward. Dean was placed in an air cast and carted off the San Angelo Stadium turf on a stretcher.
"I caught the ball and the defender tried to grab me from behind. I guess my cleat got stuck in the ground and he pulled me down," Dean said. "I kind of like popped my knee. Definitely a rough break."

Midwestern State sports fans have to be scratching their heads a little this season when it comes to their teams and national rankings.
After all, the Mustangs have had their men’s soccer team ranked No. 2 in the nation, drop out of the poll because their dues hadn’t been paid, and then return to the poll in the No. 3 spot despite being the only unbeaten and untied team in the nation.
Likewise the cross country team dropped a spot after winning a meet. Then, while idle the next week, it moved up a spot.
But seeing the football team drop from No. 8 to No.15 after losing a close contest to No. 5 Abilene Christian seemed a little bit harsh.
After all, Texas A&M-Kingsville had lost to the same team the week before, on its own field, and the game wasn’t as close as the 31-24 final score indicated.
Yet the Javelinas only fell from No. 6 to No. 10.
Most of the voters probably didn’t take that into account.
That’s because most of the time it matters more when you lose than whom you lose to.
Or whom you beat, for that matter.

After six weeks of Lone Star Conference action, only the Midwestern State men and women’s teams remain undefeated in league play. The Mustangs moved up two spots in the women’s NCAA Division II poll to No. 19, while the men sit at No. 2. Seven out of the 13 women’s games were decided in overtime action keeping the race to be one of the six teams to earn a spot in the conference championships very tight.

David Freeland, Midwestern State University, Jr., F, Odessa, Texas, Permian HS Freeland tallied a goal and two assists to help No. 2 Midwestern State to two Lone Star Conference wins over No. 21 Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M last week at the MSU Soccer Field. The junior from Odessa assisted two goals in a 4-0 win over ENMU before notching the equalizing goal in the 51st minute on a bicycle kick to knot the match at 1-1 after the Mustangs trailed for the first time this season.
MEN’S DEFENSIVE
Chris Fidler, University of the Incarnate Word, Jr., Bramhall, Cheshire, England Chris Fidler allowed just two goals-against this weekend, helping the UIW Cardinals remain undefeated for seven games. Versus Northeastern State University, Fidler made five saves and kept Incarnate Word in the game until UIW could come back from a 1-0 deficit and tie the game. The Cardinals won in overtime, 2-1. Against Newman University on Sunday, Fidler was rarely tested and made one save in the Cardinals’ victory.
WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Amber Guenther, University of the Incarnate Word, Fr., M, San Antonio, TX, Johnson HS Guenther set up the game-winning goal for Incarnate Word on the road against Texas Woman’s in a 1-0 overtime win and also scored in a 3-1 win over Texas A&M-Commerce.
WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Hanna Staley, Midwestern State University, SO, Austin, Texas, McNeil HS Staley tallied her first goal of the season off of a well-timed run on a corner kick as she headed in a go-ahead goal in No. 21 Midwestern State’s 2-1 win Sunday against West Texas A&M. The sophomore from Austin also plays a key role at central defender where she helped the Mustangs limit Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M to six shots per match including MSU’s fourth shutout of the season Friday night against the Zias.
WOMEN’S GOALKEEPER
Chelsey Dodd, Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Jr., Lewisville, TX, Lewisville HS Dodd helped lead Southwestern Oklahoma State University to a pair of victories over rival Northeastern State and East Central. Dodd was in goal for 180 minutes and allowed just one shot past her which came in SWOSU’s 2-1 victory over Northeastern. She collected her first shout-out of the year in a 1-0 blanking of East Central on Sunday.

Lone Star Conference games along with non-conference contests are scheduled this week. Abilene Christian and West Texas A&M are both 6-0 in conference play to lead the league with Angelo State at 5-1 behind them as teams compete for one of eight spots at the LSC Volleyball Championship.

Beck helped the Zias post a 2-1 record last week and their first back-to-back sweeps since August 2006. She had 12 kills against Midwestern State and followed with 13 kills, a .423 attack percentage and three service aces in the win over Cameron. On Tuesday, Beck added seven kills against Oklahoma Panhandle State.
Katelyn Osborne, Texas Woman’s University, JR, Lubbock, TX, Lubbock HS
Helped the Pioneers to two five-set wins last week. She led the team in kills, service aces and points. Osborne recorded 11 kills, nine digs and three block assists against Dallas Baptist and then recorded her first career double-double (13 kills and 17 digs) to help the team rally against Tarleton State.
DEFENSIVE
Lauren Bayer, Midwestern State University, SR, San Antonio, Texas, Taft HS
Bayer continued her consistent play at the net averaging 1.57 blocks per set to help Midwestern State to a Lone Star Conference split last week at Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M. The senior from San Antonio recorded six total blocks in Thursday’s win over the Zias then notched five total blocks in a three-set setback against the Lady Buffs. Bayer has recorded at least five total blocks in nine matches this season and in five of the last seven.
Kendra Coulson, Texas Woman’s University, SR, Abilene, TX, Abilene HS
The senior libero led the team in digs and service aces in two five-set wins last week. She had a team-high 23 digs against Tarleton State to help the team rally from a 2-1 deficit and 13-8 deficit in the fifth set. Coulson has recorded 15 or more digs in 15 games this season and 20 or more in seven games.
SETTER
Erika Dupree, West Texas A&M University, JR, Mesquite, Texas, Poteet HS
Dupree had another all-around performance for the Lady Buffs this past week, recording 21 kills, 75 assists and 19 digs to help lead the Lady Buffs to a 3-0 record. The Mesquite native tallied her team-leading 12th double-double of the season in Friday’s win over Arkansas-Fort Smith, finishing the match with 13 kills and 20 assists. Dupree averaged 8.33 assists per set this weekend, nearly 2.5 more assists than her season average, which led the Lady Buffs to a combined .279 hitting percentage as a team.
Alex Woolsey, Angelo State University, SO, Plano, Texas, Plano East HS
Woolsey helped the Rambelles to back-to-back 3-0 sweeps of Lone Star Conference foes Southwestern Oklahoma and Central Oklahoma. Woolsey recorded her team-leading sixth double-double of the season in a non-conference match at No. 21 Abilene Christian when she recorded 21 assists and 10 digs. The setter out of Plano, Texas paced the ‘Belles offense in back-to-back 3-0 sweeps of conference foes SWOSU and UCO helping ASU to a season-high .435 hitting percentage versus the Bulldogs. Woolsey also notched nine kills, 21 digs, three total blocks and a service ace in the three matches for the ‘Belles.
