Eastern New Mexico at Angelo State - 6:00
The 2016 season is not going the way either of these programs anticipated. Both squads are off to 1-2 starts, and struggling to stay in the top half of the LSC. Few expected the Greyhounds to beat Texas A&M-Commerce last week, but I don't think anyone expected them to trail 42-0 midway through three quarters on the way to a crushing 49-10 loss. Kamal Cass is a great running back, but the Lions held him to 62 yards and 0 TDs rushing, and ENMU does not have a passing game to supplement the run game. For the Rams, last weeks loss was surprising, and the margin of defeat was shocking. The defense played well early, limiting Tarleton to 16 yards on their first 6 possessions, but eventually wore down as offensive turnovers and a couple of long TD runs in the second half blew the game wide open. The Rams offense was unable to generate much of a threat, gaining just 222 yards against a defense giving up 560 coming into the game.
Tarleton State at #RV West Texas A&M - 6:00
Now here's a matchup of teams that seem to be on the upswing from slow starts. The Texans had the worst defense in the nation last year, and had given up 550 yards and 32 points per game in their first two games. Last week, the defense limited Angelo State to a FG (a blocked PAT accounted for the other 2 points) and 222 yards. The offense started off slowly, but took advantage of two 3rd quarter turnovers for short field TD drives, and then had two long runs to finish out the scoring. The Buffs brought UT-Permian Basin back to earth with a 48-14 thumping on Sunday. The defense did not allow a score until the last minute of the game and the offense posted season highs in yardage and points.
Oklahoma Panhandle State at #11 Midwestern State - 7:00
The Aggies complete their four week road trip, paying a visit to nationally ranked Midwestern State. They come into the game after a disappointing 44-21 loss to WNMU. While the offense struggled for consistency in the first half, the defense could not get a stop, allowing six consecutive scoring drives and trailing 37-14 at the break. On the other hand, the Mustangs return home after surviving an upset scare at TAMUK last week. Other than an opening FG drive, the Mustangs struggled in the first half, with two turnovers, a safety and 85 yards offensively. That all changed in the second half as the Mustangs took advantage of two turnovers and scored TDs on all four possessions, outscoring the Javelinas 26-3 in the third, and then holding off a fourth quarter rally.

The Mustangs will be hard pressed to improve on last week's first half. The offense moved the ball 355 yards and scored 37 points. The defense forced 2 turnovers and 3 punts, allowing OPSU just one scoring drive. The only negative was a blocked FG returned for a TD early in the first quarter. Did Javia Hall (4 TDs passing, 2 TDs rushing) have the game of his life, or is he an emerging LSC star at QB? The Falcons got a rude introduction to LSC football, suffering a 48-14 loss to WTAM. The offense struggled most of the day - with 3 turnovers, 8 punts among the first 12 possessions. The only offensive score came on a 15 play, 75 yard drive at the end of the game. The defense did a bit better, but not much. Such is the life of a first year football program.
SR 4 & National Game of the Week - #5 Ashland at #7 Ferris State
Both teams went 10-0 in GLIAC conference play last year, when they did not have to face each other. Ashland has had two easy games and a solid win over Wayne State in week 2. Ferris State opened the season with an easy win over Ohio Dominican, and then had come back for a last minute win over Michigan Tech and Northwood, overcoming double digit second half deficits in both games.
Ashland has the second most prolific offense in the GLIAC, scoring 39.7 points per game while gaining 552.3 yards. Ferris State is a bit behind, with 32.7 points and 465.3 yards. Defensively, Ashland is tops in the GLIAC giving up just 9.3 points and is third in yards allowed, 284.3. Ferris State has given up 18 points and 276.7 yards per game.

The Javelinas served notice that they are ready to compete with the top teams in the LSC. They traded body blows with Midwestern State but fell short as the Mustangs kicked the game winning FG with 12 seconds remaining in the game. The Javelinas could not quite overcome a third quarter in which they turned the ball over twice, and MSU outscored them 26-3. The Lions have to be pleased with last week's ball game. They built up a 42-0 lead midway through the third quarter, scoring TDs on 6 drives and missing a 47 yard FG on the only non-scoring possession. They outgained ENMU 423-108 during that stretch, forcing 4 punts and picking off a pass early in the game.

Eastern at ASU: If the Greyhounds get their ground attack back on track, they can keep ASU's already-struggling offense off the field and pull away. I think they will.Tarleton at WT: TSU's defense has been (somewhat) better this year, but now the offense is struggling. I'll take WT coming off a dominant road win in trying conditions.
OPSU at MSU: Mustangs might start slow again, but I expect this one to be in firm control for the home team by halftime, or early 3rd quarter.
WNMU at UTPB: tough call, both have looked better-than-expected at times, and both have struggled at times. I think I'll take Permian in their 4th-straight home game.
Kingsville at Commerce: I'll take the Lions at home, but I think if TAMUK can keep it reasonably close, after the near-upset of MSU last week, you have to think the Hoggies are for real.
Ashland at Ferris: Bulldogs have been more tested recently, with 2 road wins by a combined 3 points. Ashland hasn't been on the road yet. Without knowing these teams super-well, I'll take the home team who's faced a bit more adversity rather than the team that hasn't been punched in the mouth very often so far.
Highest combined score: TSU and WT have had some shootouts before, and WT's offense seems to be clicking. If Tarleton can get things going, this could be another high-scoring game.

#RV Texas A&M Kingsville at #6 Texas A&M Commerce - Can the Javelinas finish off a close game and throw the LSC race into chaos? If they can avoid a prolonged stretch like last week's third quarter, they have a good chance. However, the Lions have the ability to force errors and then take advantage of them. Home field and experience help the Lions to a 42-32 win.
