Gonzales feels Javelinas have talent to talent to win Lone Star Conference baseball title - George Vondracek, Corpus Christi Caller Times
Coming out of fall workouts, Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball coach Jason Gonzales said the Javelinas were closer to gathering their main core of players with whom to attack the 2011 season.
The rub now is that close isn't good enough. The Javelinas open the season Tuesday at Nolan Ryan Field against Houston-Victoria and Gonzales said A&M-Kingsville still may be 10-20 games away from setting that core group that will try to improve on last year's 28-25 record.
"But the great thing about this team is we've got some options. We don't have to sit with a guy who's in a slump for any length of time," Gonzales said. "We've got somebody right behind him or right beside him that's going to push him pretty good. So we'll have to play it out a couple of weeks to see exactly where we are and who is where."

Ricki Rothbauer has experienced her share of success as a softball player and coach, with two College World Series appearances and academic All-American credentials at Northern Kentucky dotting her resume.
Transplanting those successes to Texas A&M-Kingsville may or may not be an easy proposition. But that all depends on the Javelinas, who open the season Tuesday with a coach who has been on board since November.
"For me, when I try to answer that question, it comes down to the kind of energy they bring. The successful programs that I've been in it all comes to what kind of attitude you have, what kind of energy do you bring to your preparation," said Rothbauer, who also has coached a club team in Louisville to a fifth-place national finish. "So that's what I'm trying to impart to the kids.
"There's a certain amount of energy that has to be there so that you can be successful every day, so that your energy in practice is the same as it is in games," said Rothbauer, who spent the last three seasons as North Alabama's assistant. "So that's kind of what I'm trying to have them grow accustomed to."

LSC BASKETBALL
It’s Rivalry Week for Lone Star Conference teams, which means each team will play their rival twice in home and home match-ups this Wednesday and Saturday.
Only three men’s and women’s teams are still undefeated in divisional play. On the men’s side, Central Oklahoma boasts a perfect 5-0 mark, while UCO and Tarleton State each have 6-0 records in the women’s standings. Teams are competing for a berth in the LSC Basketball Championship to be held March 2-6 in Bartlesville, Okla.
The LSC men have a 165-122 overall record so far this season, including a 91-56 mark in the South Division and 74-66 in the North. In league crossover action, the South Division holds a 36-20 record over its North opponents including a flawless 7-0 record by West Texas A&M. In the NCAA South Central Region, the men’s teams are currently 25-12 combined versus Heartland Conference teams and 6-2 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).
The LSC women are 148-147 overall, with a 63-82 mark in the South and 85-65 in the North this season. In league crossover play the North has the advantage, 38-26, including a perfect 8-0 mark by Northeastern State over the South teams. The women’s teams are currently 18-22 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 4-2 against the MIAA in the NCAA South Central Region.

Flemmings averaged 16.5 points and shot 50 percent from the field as the Southwestern Oklahoma went 1-1 on the week. SWOSU was a one-point loser, 73-72, at Texas A&M-Commerce before knocking off Southeastern Oklahoma, 71-52, Saturday at home. Flemmings raised his season scoring average to 10.6 points per game, the best on the team.

SOUTH MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Richard Thomas, Angelo State University, SR, Guard, Queens, N.Y., St. John’s HS
Angelo State’s No. 3 scoring option is now its No. 1 choice and that seems to suit the Rams and Thomas just fine. The Queens, N.Y., native averaged 26.5 points and 11.0 rebounds last week while helping Angelo State to an excruciatingly painful win at Eastern New Mexico, 70-68, and an upset of No. 13 Incarnate Word, 80-71, at the Junell Center. ASU lost senior forward Ridge McKeither for an unknown period of time due to a knee injury against the Greyhounds, but a career-high-tying 28 points from Thomas helped rally the Rams Wednesday night. Thomas then chipped in 25 points and led all players with 11 rebounds as ASU topped its second top-25 opponent at home this season Saturday against the Cardinals. Thomas was very efficient for the week, hitting 60 percent (18-of-30) of his shots from the field, including 66.7 percent (6-of-9) from beyond the arc. He also made 11-of-12 (91.7 percent) of his free throws and notched his second and third double-doubles in the last six contests.
SOUTH MEN’S DEFENSIVE

Jefferson averaged 20 points and 11 rebounds in key LSC South Division match ups with Angelo State and Abilene Christian. Against ACU, he registered a career-high 26 points along with nine rebounds (five defensive), three steals and four assists. Jefferson hit 14 of his 15 free throw attempts and scored five straight points for the Hounds after the Wildcats trimmed a 19-point ENMU lead down to a single point. Against ASU, he grabbed nine defensive rebounds and two steals, along with 14 points scored.
NORTH WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Tosha Tyler, Northeastern State University, SO, Guard, Vinita, Okla., Vinita HS
Tyler paced Northeastern State to a 2-0 week in LSC North action by scoring 37 points (18.5 average), while shooting over 60 percent for the week. Tyler notched a career-high at East Central with 28 points, 25 of those coming in the first half when she was 7-for-7 from the field, 5-of-5 from behind the arc and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. She made six consecutive 3-point baskets, two shy of the LSC mark, before missing a shot late in the game. She finished 8-of-9 from the floor, 6-of-7 from the arc and 6-of-6 at the line. Her 6 treys matched the NSU school record. For the week, Tyler was 11-of-17 overall (.647), 8-of-11 from 3-point range (.727) and 7-of-8 (.875) from the charity stripe. The No. 7-ranked RiverHawks beat ECU 80-59 and posted a 67-52 win at home against Texas Woman’s to improve to 16-2 overall and 5-1 in league play.
NORTH WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Alex Richardson, University of Central Oklahoma, JR, Center, Edmond, Okla., Santa Fe HS
Richardson came off the bench to spark UCO to a pair of North Division wins as the Bronchos stayed unbeaten in league play, averaging 16.5 points, 6.5 rebounds (5.0 defensive) and 3.5 blocked shots a game while shooting 57.9 percent from the field and 73.3 percent from the line. The junior center scored a career-high 26 points in a 95-64 road rout of Texas Woman’s,while adding six rebounds (four defensive), two steals and one block and then had seven points, seven rebounds (six defensive) and six blocks -- the second-most in school history -- in an 81-76 victory over East Central.
SOUTH WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Mack Lankford, Abilene Christian University, FR, Guard, Weatherford, Texas, Weatherford HS
Lankford has seen her scoring average climb to 17.6 points per game to lead the Wildcats in scoring including a 25.5 average last week. The Weatherford native scored 20 points in a win at Incarnate Word and finished with her third highest total of the season with 31 in a win over Eastern New Mexico. Lankford hit a career-high six three pointers in a win over Eastern New Mexico. She was also 8 for 11 from the free throw line combined in both wins.
SOUTH WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Kelsey Benford, Tarleton State University, SR, Center, Waxahachie, Texas, Waxahachie HS
Benford stifled the third leading scorer in the conference and out-muscled the second leading rebounder in the offense in the TexAnns’ wins over West Texas A&M and Texas A&M-Kingsville. Benford held the Lady Buffs’ Jamie Simmons to just eight points and a single rebound, while forcing three turnovers and grabbing eight boards on Wednesday, as Tarleton defeated WTAMU by 21 points. On Saturday, Benford forced Kingsville’s two bigs, Thomas and Gonzalez, to commit seven turnovers combined, while recording three blocks and two steals to go with her six rebounds and five assists. Tarleton’s opponents were held to just 31.7 percent from the field and averaged just 52.0 points per contest.
