WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Southwestern Oklahoma State University put together a determined effort but could not push past a talented Texas Woman’s University basketball team, losing 74-63 Thursday night in Weatherford.

The loss dropped SWOSU to 10-11 overall and 2-7 in the Lone Star Conference’s North Division while TWU improved to 15-8 and 6-2 in division play. SWOSU will next play Saturday at East Central University at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs next home game will be Wednesday, Feb. 16 against Texas A&M-Commerce. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

TWU got 24 points from Jessica Hanna and led wire-to-wire against SWOSU. The game was last tied at 20-20 when SWOSU’s Michelle Fisher scored on a layup with 9:59 to play in the first half. The Pioneers then went on a 15-4 run over the next five minutes to open up a 35-24 lead only to see SWOSU fight back.

Sumiya Darden who had 20 of her game-high 24 points scored a string of points over the next five minutes and helped the Bulldogs give chase. Tasha Brown’s basket with 39 seconds cut TWU’s lead to 39-38 at the halftime break.

The second half was a different story for SWOSU. After making better than 52% of their shots in the game’s first 20 minutes, SWOSU struggled offensively in the second. SWOSU made just nine-of-24 shots for 38% and scored just 25 points. TWU finished the game making 26-of-58 field goal attempts for 45%.

The Pioneers outrebounded SWOSU 31-29 and committed six fewer turnovers (22-16). TWU’s lead was back in double figures five minutes into the second half. The Pioneers kept that cushion for the game’s remainder allowing SWOSU to close to with seven points on one occasion.
