UMass Lowell’s Jeff Veiga Honored as Division II’s Scholar Athlete of the Year
NEW ORLEANS – Jeff Veiga of UMass Lowell was named the USTFCCCA NCAA Division II Men’s Scholar Athlete of the Year for the 2010 cross country season on Wednesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Veiga was the third overall individual finisher at the NCAA Cross Country Championships this fall.

Scholar Athletes of the Year are determined from among those who earned All-Academic status and placed highest individually at the most recent NCAA Championships.

Cross Country Men’s Scholar Athlete of the Year – Jeff Veiga, UMass Lowell

Veiga, an accounting major with a 3.33 cumulative GPA, was the third-place overall finisher at the 2010 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships. In addition, the Lowell, Mass., native won the NCAA East Regional title this fall to earn USTFCCCA East Region Athlete of the Year honors. Veiga was the runner-up at the Northeast-10 Conference Championships.

182 Earn All-Academic Status

In addition to the Scholar Athlete of the Year, the USTFCCCA also announced those men who earned 2010 Division II All-Academic Cross Country status.

A total of 182 student-athletes represent the 89 institutions that compose the group. Mars Hill led the nation with five All-Academic honorees while 11 schools tied with four nods apiece to follow. The PSAC led all conferences with 29 on the list and the GLVC came next with 15.

Ten of the top 20 finishers at the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championships earned All-Academic status, including top-ten finishers Veiga, Brandon Birdsong (Adams State), and Jordan Welling (Western Washington). In addition, two of eight NCAA Regional Champions from the 2010 season earned All-Academic honors.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team in Division II, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or greater through the most-recent semester, completed at least 12 credit hours in the semester of cross country competition, and placed in the top 50 percent at the most recent NCAA National Championships or in the top 30 percent at the NCAA Regional Championships.

Neely Spence of Shippensburg Adds Scholar Athlete of the Year Title to NCAA Crown
NEW ORLEANS – Neely Spence of Shippensburg was named the USTFCCCA NCAA Division II Women’s Scholar Athlete of the Year for the 2010 cross country season on Wednesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Spence won the NCAA Cross Country individual title in the fall.

Cross Country Women’s Scholar Athlete of the Year – Neely Spence, Shippensburg

Spence, a junior from Shippensburg, Pa., won the NCAA women’s individual title in cross country for the first time this past fall and became the school’s first national champion in the sport. Spence, who holds a 3.84 cumulative GPA in the field of human communication studies, took the six-kilometer race at the national championships in 20:41.2, over 15 seconds ahead of runner-up Sarah Porter of Western Washington. Spence led the Red Raiders to a fourth-place national team finish.

Spence went undefeated through the 2010 cross country season, winning a third-straight NCAA regional title and PSAC conference crown to go with the national crown. At the Greater Louisville Classic, Spence set a new 5k course record and won the race which included many from Division I.

313 Earn All-Academic Status

In addition to the Scholar Athlete of the Year, the USTFCCCA also announced those women who earned 2010 Division II All-Academic Cross Country status.

A total of 313 student-athletes represent the 115 institutions that compose the group. Slippery Rock, U-Mary, and Western State led the nation with seven All-Academic honorees while five schools tied with six nods apiece to follow. The PSAC led all conferences with 52 on the list and the Northeast-10 came next with 25.

Twelve of the top 20 finishers at the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championships earned All-Academic status, including top-ten finishers Spence, Kristen McGlynn (Adams State), Ruth Keino (Alaska-Anchorage), and Megan Maceratini (Grand Valley State). In addition, six of eight NCAA Regional Champions from the 2010 season earned All-Academic honors.

Softball Weekly Release: ASU, MSU off to best starts in school history - LSC Office

Even with a delayed start due to the winter weather across Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico, the Lone Star Conference softball season is underway.  Angelo State is still unbeaten at 9-0 marking the fourth-best start in school history, while Midwestern State is off to its best start in program history at 11-1.
    LSC softball teams are 55-36 overall, with a 33-21 record in the South and 22-15 in the North this season.  The squads are currently 21-15 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 3-3 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, which are the other two conferences in the NCAA South Central Region.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
NORTH HITTER
Courtney Bingham, Midwestern State University, SO, Arlington, Texas, Arlington HS
Bingham paced a stellar hitting attack for No. 23 Midwestern State to lead the Mustangs to their best start in school history at 11-1. The sophomore from Arlington hit .463 with a double, four triples and a homer to drive in a team-high 15 runs. Bingham also drew five walks to get on-base at a .522 clip. Bingham has collected a hit in 10 of MSU’s 12 games and drove in four runs against Southeastern Oklahoma on Feb. 11 and versus Southern Arkansas on Feb. 13.


NORTH PITCHER
Kristina Gutierrez, Midwestern State University, SR, Pearland, Texas, Dobie HS
Gutierrez’ hot start has giving No. 21 Midwestern State a pair of top line starters as she has helped the Mustangs to their best start in school history at 11-1. The senior from Pearland posted a perfect 5-0 mark with a 1.47 ERA including a pair of shutouts against Southeastern Oklahoma and Southern Arkansas. Gutierrez has allowed just seven runs and 25 hits in 33 1/3 innings and has been exceptional in the strike zone. She has posted 48 strikeouts and walked just two batters while limiting the opposition to a .207 batting average against.


SOUTH HITTER
Chelsey Walters, Angelo State University, SO, Shortstop, Odessa, Texas, Odessa HS
Walters, ASU’s leadoff hitter, sets the table for the nationally ranked Rambelle softball team. The Odessa native has a .528 on-base percentage to complement her .469 batting average. She leads the eighth-ranked ‘Belles in hits (15), runs scored (14) and batting average (.469), while going a perfect 4-for-4 on stolen bases. The shortstop is doing it with the leather as well, posting a team-best 26 assists.


SOUTH PITCHER
Briana Sanchez, University of the Incarnate Word, SO, San Antonio, Texas, Marshall HS
Sanchez has a posted a .54 ERA and 4-0 record in complete game efforts.  Against Our Lady of the Lake, she threw a no-hitter in an 8-0 run-rule victory. The sophomore is averaging 9.75 strikeouts per game with 39 K’s in 26 innings.  Opposing batters are hitting just .144, including a pair of comeback efforts in which Sanchez didn’t allow a run after the Cardinals took the lead.
