Ex-Javelinas star Randle lands in Texas Sports Hall - Richard Oliver, San Antonio Express
WACO — John Randle recalls arriving at the Texas A&I campus in summer 1988, a long-limbed defensive lineman transferring in from Trinity Valley Community College.
It was 9 o'clock at night. And it was still hot.
“It was so dark, you couldn't see anything,” Randle said, laughing. “The next morning, I got up and all I could see was palm trees everywhere around me. I thought, ‘Where the heck am I?'”
The retired football player had much the same feeling Monday night as he arrived at the Texas Sports Hall of Fame to be inducted into its 2010 class.
Randle, 43, grew up in Mumford, just outside Hearne. He learned football playing with his two brothers on the dirt yard outside the 400-square-foot shack shared with their single mom, Martha.
But from those humble surroundings, his gridiron talent took him from high school to community college in Athens to Texas A&I and on to stardom with the Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks. In August, Randle — undersized in high school and undrafted out of college — was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
“I wasn't the biggest guy playing football,” he said in the raspy voice that bedeviled offensive linemen and quarterbacks for 13 NFL seasons. “I probably had the most fun of anybody playing football.”
