Northeastern State Hires New Head Football Coach

Kenny Evans is now the 17th head football coach for Northeastern State University. Evans earned bachelor’s degrees in both physical education and biology from Northeastern State in 1982 and his master’s degree in physical education from Oklahoma in 1985.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for me,” said Evans, a native of nearby Warner Oklahoma. “When you look at the facilities, and in meeting with several within the NSU community, it is very easy to understand everything is in place for us to be successful in the Athletic Department, and specifically in the football program. “There are many young men who will want to call Northeastern State University home. We are going to recruit hard over the next several weeks and bring in quality student-athletes to become RiverHawks. This is a great situation and I am convinced we can win.”

“Kenny Evans has proven he has the credentials to lead Northeastern State and our football program,” said Eddie Griffin, director of athletics. “His experiences and expertise as a solid recruiter will help take us to the next level. In addition to being a great recruiter, he has also proven to be a dynamic coach who relates well to student-athletes from diverse cultures, making them men of character and outstanding citizens. NSU is proud to have him as a member of our family.”

“I want to express my gratitude to the screening committee for their tireless efforts in our search to find a new head coach for our football program,” said Kim Cherry, NSU Acting President. “This group screened more than 60 applicants in a short period of time, and I want to commend them on a job well done.

“I believe Kenny Evans, as an NSU alumnus, proven leader and coach, is the right person for Northeastern State University and I want to encourage all NSU alumni, faculty, staff and students to rally around our new coach as we move forward.”
