Change Is Always In The Air

From Mike Kirk

One of the biggest things I’ve learned about athletics over the years is that the only constant is change.

Whether it’s professional franchises moving from city to city or a college dropping/adding a sport or a high school going from one classification to another, change is always in the air. Athletics at all levels is an ever-evolving process.

And so it is with UCO, which last week announced that the Bronchos would soon be leaving the Lone Star Conference to join the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, a move that will probably take effect in 2012-13. Basically, we’re trading one of the premier conferences in NCAA Division II for another.

It’s not the first time UCO has made a drastic change in athletics and it certainly won’t be the last. The latest move is just one of many the university has made over the last 100-plus years, with the Bronchos having competed in various organizations on the national level and in several different conferences during their history.

Heck, the school name itself has undergone many changes. From Territorial Normal School to Central State Normal School to Central State Teachers College to Central State College to Central State University to the University of Central Oklahoma.

All that being said, it will be a sad day when I must say farewell to the Lone Star Conference. UCO was in its first year as an LSC member when I came aboard in the fall of 1987, so I’ve come to know and love this league – and the people in it – throughout my nearly 24-year career with the Bronchos.
