LSC Scoop Afternoon Update 8-26

LSC Football Weekly Release
LSC FOOTBALL KICKS OFF

The 2010 Lone Star Conference football season starts Thursday with two non-conference games as Southeastern Oklahoma plays at Henderson State and Southwestern Oklahoma hosts Emporia State. Both games kick-off at 7 p.m. Week one continues with three more non-conference games on August 28 at 7 p.m.: Pittsburg State at Central Oklahoma, Langston at Incarnate Word and Southern Nazarene at Eastern New Mexico. Only five league teams are playing in week one with the other nine starting their season in week two (either Sept. 2 or Sept. 4) due to the NCAA Division II Life in the Balance initiative which was approved in January 2010. The package provided a one-week later date for first permissible contests in all fall sports unless teams had previously scheduled contests, then they were granted a one-year waiver for 2010.

IN 2010, ALL LSC GAMES COUNT

Due to the addition of Incarnate Word, all 14 LSC football teams will play 10 conference games with four crossover and six division contests. Previously, each team counted only nine games in the conference standings and due to unequal teams in the divisions, three South Division teams played a crossover game that did not count in the standings.

NON-CONFERENCE GAMES
The LSC will play 13 non-conference games this year including five this week, six in week two and two more in week four. Games are scheduled against opponents from the Mid-America Intercollegiate (MIAA), Great Lakes Intercollegiate, Gulf South, Northern Sun and Rocky Mountain conferences along with the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision and NAIA ranks. Below is the breakdown:

MIAA (5): Emporia State at Southwestern Oklahoma; Pittsburg State at Central Oklahoma; Texas A&M- Kingsville at Northwest Missouri State; Abilene Christian at Washburn; East Central at Fort Hays State
GLIAC (1): West Texas A&M at Grand Valley State
GSC (1): Southeastern Oklahoma at Henderson State
NSIC (1): Upper Iowa at Texas A&M-Commerce
RMAC (1): Midwestern State at New Mexico Highlands
NAIA (2): Langston at Incarnate Word; Southern Nazarene at Eastern New Mexico
DIVISION I FCS (2): Northeastern State at North Dakota; Tarleton State at Northwestern State
PLUS ONE

The LSC has added a new member and 14th football team with the addition of Incarnate Word. The Cardinals will play in the South Division, while Eastern New Mexico moves to the North resulting in seven teams for each. UIW’s first LSC game will be a crossover tilt at Southeastern Oklahoma on Sept. 11. Head coach Mike Santiago leads the team in the program’s second year.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION

West Texas A&M will begin its 2010 season with a nationally televised game at Grand Valley State on Thursday, Sept. 2. The game will be shown live by CBS College Sports in high definition at 7 p.m. This is the fifth time an LSC team was selected to be part of the Division II and CBS College Sports Network package. Last year, WT won its last six games, including a 31-25 victory over Nebraska-Omaha in the Lower Kanza Bowl in Topeka, Kansas. GVSU reached the 2009 Division II championship game against Northwest Missouri State last year before falling, 30-23. The Lakers have won two national titles since 2005 and reached the national semifinals in 2007.

LSC Fall Sports Preview Series: Cameron - Nick Eatman, LSC Office
This is the 15th of a 16-part series, analyzing the fall sports of each school in the Lone Star Conference. Today will feature Cameron University.

Volleyball

Third-year head coach Brianne Lowe has had a pair of winning seasons at Cameron, including a 17-12 record in 2009.

But while some coaches would accept that mark, it’s hard to not think what might have been for the Aggies, who started off last season with a 10-2 record, including a seven-game winning streak to start the season.

But injuries to key players, along with a facing an always-stout LSC schedule, the Aggies struggled in conference play, finishing 10th with a 5-8 league record to just miss the postseason tournament for the second straight year.

“We had to go with a brand new line-up in the middle of the conference season, and I know other teams go through the same things we do,” Lowe stated. “What hurt us was we spent all preseason getting ready and getting a good line-up and the girls adjusted to that, but we couldn’t adjust fast enough after the injury.”

But Smedley has reason to be excited once again, thanks to the return of a pair of junior outside hitters. Nikita Abbot was a second-team All-LSC selection last year, ranking third in the conference in kills, averaging 3.40 per game.

Adrienne Lawson is the other returning starter after she recorded 223 kills (third on the team) and a team-high 396 digs.

Freshman outside hitter Megan Olivarez already has Lowe’s confidence.

“Megan has worked really hard over the summer and she is a fighter and wants to play. I’m expecting her to come in and not act like a freshman,” Lowe said. “I expect her not to be timid and come in and attack that position.”

Senior middle blocker Amber Schroer returns up front and will be joined by junior-college transfers Filly Ezenwa (Redlands CC) and Amanda Filiaga (College of Southern Idaho)

Defensively, the Aggies will be young but will count on sophomore Joanie Dubberly and redshirt freshman Mariah Westlake. While the Aggies were picked 11th in the LSC preseason poll, Lowe knows it won’t be easy, especially with an always tough conference slate.

“All of the conference schools are stepping their game up. The schools are stepping up their recruiting with the loss of so many key players,” Lowe said. “From top to bottom we are going to see the teams have taken a step forward with their play.”

LSC Fall Sports Preview Series: Texas Woman's - Nick Eatman, LSC Office
This is the 14th of a 16-part series, analyzing the fall sports of each school in the Lone Star Conference. Today will feature Texas Woman’s University.

Volleyball

The Pioneers take a step back in 2009 with a 16-17 record, following a 20-win season the previous year.

Last season, TWU stayed right around the .500 mark all season long, never posting a winning streak of more than four games and three games was the longest losing skid of the season. TWU did win its last two regular-season games, beating Southeastern Oklahoma in five sets and then sweeping East Central to advance to the school’s sixth straight LSC Championship.

But eighth-year head coach Shelly Barberee still has seven players back from last year, including five starters.

Leading the way for TWU in 2010 should be senior outside hitter Alyson Harlan, a second-team All-LSC pick last year. Harlan led the squad with 273 kills, along with a team-high 334.0 points.

Also back is senior libero Kendra Coulson, who ranked sixth last season in the LSC, averaging 4.31 digs per contest.

Sophomore Erica Humbach finished seventh in the league in blocks, averaging 0.81 a game.

Other key returners for TWU this season include senior setter Sydney Veitenheimer, senior middle blocker Laura McClung and junior middle blocker Katelyn Osborne.

Newcomers to the squad are junior-college transfers Megan Chetwood (North Lake College) and Andrea Rivera-Rojas (Iowa Western CC) and incoming freshmen Chole’ Tate and Brittney Adkisson.

The Pioneers are picked to finish eighth in the preseason LSC standings. Early in the season, the squad will travel to Hawaii for a four-game tournament to face teams such as BYU-Hawaii, Chaminade and Hawaii-Hilo.
