Dangerous Dangerfield

It didn't take Donald Dangerfield very long to figure out football.

The Hugo native didn't play the game until he was an upperclassman in high school. Now, he's returning for his junior season at Northeastern State, coming off a 2009 season where he was one of the team leaders in tackles.

"Donald is a great story," said NSU head coach Kenny Evans. "He's a guy that only played two years of high school football because he didn't play until his junior year. He was a great basketball player, but he was also a great athlete."

Despite the lack of experience, Dangerfield, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound outside linebacker, said he wants to be an All-American this upcoming season.

"Honestly, I want to make All-American," said Dangerfield, who logged 83 tackles in 2009. "I made All-Conference last year, and I feel like I can make All-American. Hopefully it works out for me."

In order to be one of the elite linebackers in Division II, Dangerfield will have to duplicate performances like the one he had against Texas A&M-Commerce last year. In NSU's 27-12 loss to Commerce, Dangerfield came up with 13 total tackles while recording three tackles for a loss. He also shined in the RiverHawks' game against West Texas A&M, posting 16 total tackles and a pass breakup.

THIS ISSUE OF the Javelina Highlights begins the 11th year of its publication.  The first edition came out the first week of August 2000.  There have been 518 issues of the paper.

As from the beginning, the purpose of the Highlights is to give the Javelina athletic teams and individuals the coverage they deserve.  The athletic program doesn’t receive the recognition it deserves in the media. In  the summer of 2000, it was decided that if the media won’t print or air the deserving  news, we’ll do it ourselves.

A big thanks goes to the Kingsville Record for publishing the paper.

There’s always good news in Javelinaland and we’ll continue to report it to the  thousands and thousands of Javelina fans locally, regionally, statewide, nationally and  internationally.

West Texas A&M Lands Four on Women’s All-Academic Track & Field Team
WTAMU only Lone Star Conference program to receive academic recognition

CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M women’s track & field program placed four student-athletes on the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) 2010 Division II all-Academic Track & Field team.


A record total of 276 student-athletes representing 72 institutions make up the group. WTAMU is the only Lone Star Conference member to have student-athletes recognized.


The foursome includes Jadiah Riley from Moore, Okla., a junior who competed in the shot put and discus; Morgan Shelton, a freshman sprinter/hurdler from Sweetwater, Texas; Bailee Skeen, a freshman from Amarillo, Texas, who competed in sprints and hurdles; and Tara Tarrant, a freshman from Amarillo, Texas, who competed in the long sprints.


To qualify for the USTFCCCA all-Academic team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Division II Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or participated in the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships in their respective event.


Each of WT’s recipients qualified for, and competed at the 2010 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships.


“We are extremely proud of these four young women,” said WT head track & field coach Darren Flowers. “They have shown that not only are they competing at a very high level in track & field, but they are also excelling at a very high level in the classroom. That’s the type of student-athlete we want to have in our program.”
