LSC Council of Presidents act on membership - LSC Office
The Lone Star Conference Council of Presidents met Wednesday at the Texas Woman’s University Parkland Campus in Dallas, reaching a decision on its current membership situation while also vowing to move the league forward.
Earlier this summer, five member schools – University of Central Oklahoma, East Central University, Northeastern State University, Southeastern Oklahoma State University and Southwestern Oklahoma State University – announced their intentions to withdraw from the league. On Wednesday, fifteen presidents and one proxy unanimously agreed on an exit plan in which those schools will cease membership in the LSC after the 2010-11 athletic seasons.
“Today’s decision reflected a desire of our member institutions – the 11 that will remain and the five withdrawing – to move forward and look to the future,” Commissioner Stan Wagnon said. "Starting anew with the 2011-12 athletic seasons will allow everyone to get started down the respective paths that were made known earlier this summer.”
Additionally, presidents of the 11 remaining member schools adopted a pledge of commitment to the LSC, affirming the league's mission and making the following statement: “The league’s vision is to provide a first-class experience for member institutions while enabling student-athletes to excel in the playing arena and also prepare for life after intercollegiate athletics. As presidents, we are committed to the long-term viability of the Lone Star Conference and thereby pledge to work together in the years to come as the LSC strives to become the nation’s premier NCAA Division II conference.”
Commissioner Wagnon added, “I’m especially pleased with the core group of members that remain committed to the Lone Star Conference and its future success, and I’m anxious to begin working to that end.”
Beginning with the 2011-12 athletic seasons, LSC members will include: Abilene Christian University, Angelo State University, Cameron University, Eastern New Mexico University, University of the Incarnate Word, Midwestern State University, Tarleton State University, Texas A&M University-Commerce, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Texas Woman’s University and West Texas A&M University.
Javelinas name Poppell starting QB - George Vondracek, Corpus Christi Caller
KINGSVILLE — Following a close battle throughout preseason workouts, junior Nate Poppell has retained the No. 1 quarterback job and will be under center when Texas A&M-Kingsville opens the season a week from today at top-ranked Northwest Missouri State.
After exiting spring drills with the No. 1 tag, Poppell held the spot after competing with No. 2 quarterback Daniel Ramirez, a junior from Sinton. Coach Bo Atterberry told the players of the decision Wednesday.
"Just through the course of spring and this fall there's just a little more consistency there," Atterberry said of Poppell. "We've decided he'll get the first snaps."

Midwestern State won’t have many returning starters on the defensive side of the ball for the upcoming season.
Luckily for defensive coordinator Rich Renner, two of them are linebackers — the position he is responsible for.
The pair — along with another player who split time at the position — gives Renner and the Mustangs a solid base to start with as they attempt to follow up a unit that led the conference in scoring defense.
“It’s a huge help,” said Renner, who is in his second year as defensive coordinator. “They can get everybody lined up correctly; they can get the signals from the sideline; and they understand the checks and can make them. Having returning starters helps a lot. It makes my life easier because they’ve been through it before.”
Leading the way is sophomore linebacker Matt Ellerbrock (6-3, 225) who had 58 tackles, 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. Senior Austin McDaniel (5-11, 190), who is making the move from free safety, will be at an outside linebacker spot after making 36 tackles, 2.5 sacks and blocking two kicks last year.
Lining up inside with Ellerbrock is junior Ty Duncan (6-1, 215), who saw action in 11 of 12 games and had 27 tackles and an interception.

A constant question over the past few years on Bill Maskill’s weekly radio show has been, “Is the tight end going to be part of the game plan this week?”
The Midwestern State head coach’s answer is usually vague, mainly because he doesn’t want to talk specifics about what the Mustangs have in store for their opponents.
Judging from the stats over the past few years, however, the tight ends have mainly been used more for blocking than catching passes.
But catching the ball may be a more important part of their required skills for the 2010 season.
“They’ll catch more balls this year,” MSU offensive coordinator Dean Norsworthy said. “We’ve made a conscious effort to make them more a part of our passing game and make us more balanced. In the past we used them more as the H-back in our running game.”

West Texas A&M defensive end Bryan Braman stands 6-foot-6 and weighs 230 pounds. After earning all-Lone Star Conference honors last season, Braman could be the next Buff to get a shot at the NFL.
WT wide receiver Stephen Burton stands 6-4, weighs 215 pounds and is the acrobat of the Buffs receiving corps, often leaping above defensive backs to pull down a pass.
WT cornerback Caleb Randolph - at 5-9, 175 - isn't as physically imposing as Braman and Burton, but he has a well-earned reputation as a hard hitter and started all 12 games last season, including two games at linebacker.
The main thing this manly football-playing trio has in common? Hair.
Hard to believe, but Braman, Burton and Randolph can rattle off their favorite hair gel and shampoo as easily as dissecting a screen pass or a blitz. They can even get reasonably close to the precise numbers of hairs on their head - or at least the number of dreadlocks. Braman, Burton and Randolph are three of about a half-dozen Buffs that sport dreadlocks - a long, flowing mane that sticks out the backs of their helmets. It isn't often you find football players adept at discussing hair care, but the trio - obviously not follicly-challenged - have no problem.

DURANT -- "Early to bed and early to rise" is the old saying that Southeastern Oklahoma State head football coach Ray Richards has taken to heart in getting the Savage Storm ready for the 2010 football season.
With the heat of the day especially brutal this summer, Richards and his staff have had their charges up bright and early at Paul Laird Field at 7 a.m. since Aug. 5 for practice in getting ready for tonight's season opener at future new-conference rival Henderson State.
"The biggest issues are the heat and humidity," Richards said. "We've had several guys go to the hospital to get IVs. ... We looked at the weather and the (temperature) is 77 degrees at 7 o'clock, and by the time we get off the field it's 82. It doesn't affect our schedule too much, and it's worth beating the heat."
UCO center Cody Ellett: Bronchos have a good thing going - Scott Munn, NewsOK
Central Oklahoma senior Cody Ellett is a survivor. He's played fullback, guard and center during three previous football seasons. The former Broken Arrow High School standout is also the only player remaining from 24 recruits signed in 2006 by then-coach Chuck Langston. At 7 p.m. Saturday at Wantland Stadium in Edmond, Ellett will start at center as UCO opens the season against Pittsburg (Kan.) State.
Playing one position this season, as the team's starting center: "They brought me in as a center out of high school. Just to have a starting position at one spot this season is great.”
The chance of UCO bettering last season's 4-7 record: "There's lots of excitement around here, not just with the team but the entire university. I think we've got something special here, but we'll see.”
Why he's the only player left from the 2006 signing class: "We went through a coaching change, and there were some guys who had some personal issues or just felt like college football wasn't for them. I wouldn't change a thing. I'm glad I came here.”
Scale of 1-10, with 1 being the lowest, chances of playing in the NFL: "1 — or zero — whatever the least is. You know when it's time to hang 'em up. I think it's great that I got a scholarship to play at a Division II program, but I realized coming out of high school that this would be a college deal and then it would be over.”
Southeastern Set for Opener at HSU SOSU Sports Information
DURANT, Okla. - Southeastern football will open the 2010 football season with a road contest at Henderson State set for 7 p.m. on August 26. Southeastern ended the 2009 season with a 7-4 record and a 4-1 mark in Lone Star Conference North Division play, earning them second place in the division.
Against the Reddies…This marks the 21st meeting between Southeastern and Henderson State, with the teams squaring off last seasonf rot he first time since 1989. SE won last year’s contest, 54-38, in Durant, but trail the overall series with a 7-13 mark that includes a nine-game losing streak int he 1960’2 and 70’s. The Savage Storm have won the last two contests in the series.
Notes from last time out… Defeated East Central 27-26... SE finishes with a 7-4 record and a 4-1 mark in the LSC North Division, good for second place in the division... SE finishes with a winning record for the second straight season... SE has had a winning season in seven of their last eight seasons... seven wins is the most put up by an SE team since the 2005 squad finished 8-2... Jerome Hewitt will finish his career as Southeastern’s most prolific returner, holding the school records for career punt return yards (771), career punts returned (57), career kick return yardage (2,488), career kick return average (28.6) and career kicks returned (87)... those total were bolstered mightily by what is one of the best single-seasons in returns the school has ever see, finishing with the single season records for kick return yardage (975) and punt return yardage (435), as well as kicks returned (32)... with those marks he also becomes the LSC all-time leader in kick return yardage and career average, as well as posting the best single season in kick return yardage... Daniel Nichols finished the game as SE’s top receiver with 73 yards on eight catches, but his bid to match Romar Crenshaw’s season and career touchdown marks fall short... he will finish as the Storm’s all time leader in receptions at 192 and his senior season yardage total of 971 will be the fourth best season by a Storm receiver... he finishes his career with 3,036 yards and is just the second 3,000-yard receiver in school history.... the win gives SE a 45-42-6 advantage in the rivalry with ECU, the second longest running collegiate rivalry in the state of Oklahoma.
Winborn Named Preseason All-American - TAMK Sports Information
KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – Texas A&M-Kingsville senior running back Fred Winborn (N. Hollywood, CA/Grant HS) was named to the D2ProDay.com Second Team Pre-Season All-American team on Thursday.
Winborn was a First Team Daktronics Super Region Four selection last year after leading the Lone Star Conference with 1,295 yards rushing and 19 total touchdowns. He has a chance to become only the third running back in school history to lead the LSC in rushing in back-to-back seasons. The other two are all-time greats Johnny Bailey (1986-89) and Sid Blanks (1960-61).
Winborn was also tabbed as a Lindy’s Preseason Second Team All-American this year.
