Jesse Rogers waited 10 years for the moment he experienced Thursday: leading a guided tour of the newly renovated D.L. Ligon sports facility, with his board of regents oohing and ahhing behind him.

The Midwestern State University president and other MSU officials began talking 10 years ago about the updates needed at the coliseum that eventually grew to require $10.5 million for Phase 1 of the renovation and another $6.7 million for a Phase 2 renovation that is still to come.

Ligon was like “a 100-year-old home that looks good, but then you dig into it,” Rogers told his regents, staff members and members of the media who participated in the mini field trip that kicked off Thursday’s quarterly board meeting.

WEATHERFORD, Okla. --For the first time ever the Southwestern Oklahoma State University football team began its pre-season drills practicing on a brand new artificial turf field. Second year coach Dan Cocannouer and his staff put 119 players through a spirited early morning workout Thursday with a heavy emphasis on conditioning.

SWOSU practiced for just over two hours and while much time was devoted to conditioning, the Bulldogs did get some 11-on-11 sessions. There was a lot of mixing and matching going on with several new faces getting significant reps on both sides of the ball.

"We're obviously excited about opening fall camp and the opportunities we have as coaches to work with players ," Cocannouer said. "We have to focus on improving and finding out more about our team. The first few days of practice are really important to us. We'll learn a lot about the character and the competitive nature of each player and just how important winning is to them."

The Bulldogs will practice once daily for the first five days as part of the NCAA acclimatization rules with the first two days being helmets only. SWOSU's first day of full pads is expected to be on Monday, Aug. 9. The Bulldogs will then practice twice daily beginning Aug. 10 and rotate between one-a-day and two-a-day practices until school begins on Wednesday, Aug. 18.

SWOSU's first game will be at home Thursday, Aug. 26 against Emporia State.
