Abilene High football coach Steve Warren said Tuesday he has had no contact with Angelo State University regarding the university’s coaching opening.
Warren, a 1984 ASU graduate, was mentioned as a “leading prospect” for the position Monday evening by San Angelo television station KLST.
“I’ve not been contacted by anybody from Angelo State University at this point in time,” Warren said.

The university declined to renew the contracts of Dale Carr and his staff after a 5-5 season that ended Saturday. After a 9-3 first season that saw ASU make the NCAA Division II playoffs, the Rams struggled under Carr, who posted a 28-36 overall record and finished 1-5 in Lone Star Conference South Division games this season.
Except for that 2005 success, ASU has been unimpressive for most of the past decade. That stretch would have been normal for many schools, but Rams fans had become accustomed to more.
Over three decades in the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s ASU had just one losing season and celebrated an NAIA national championship in 1978. Even in their less successful seasons they often were in the LSC championship hunt late in the season.

East Central’s final football game as a member of the Lone Star was a little too much like so many games that had preceded it over the past 13 years. But as he and his staff hit the recruiting trail over the next two months, Tim McCarty will have an entirely different product to sell to prospective student athletes than any Tiger head coach in recent memory.
Saturday’s 52-21 loss at 19th-ranked West Texas A&M notwithstanding, the 2010 season was an historic step forward for ECU football. The Tigers bounced back from a distrastrous 2009 campaign and an 0-3 start this fall to win five of their next seven games, and before they climbed onto buses headed off to the season finale Friday, the school’s first-ever LSC North Division championship trophy had already been delivered to the office of ECU athletic director Brian DeAngelis.
Consider that the ECU coaches lured arguably the most talented recruiting class in school history to Ada last winter with nothing in their sample cases except the promise that things would get better on the heels of an 0-11 campaign in 2009 and it’s easy to understand why McCarty is so confident his haul of high school and junior college talent will be an even bigger one for 2011.
“We didn’t do a lot of losing in the recruiting business last year — we did a lot of winning,” McCarty said. “There’s been some validation in what we’re doing, and some of the invitations from us (to recruits) will be a little harder to get, too. In reality, (2010) was our first recruiting class (McCarty and his staff got a late start on their recruiting for 2009 because he wasn’t hired until January), and we’ve still got a lot of work to do,” he added. “We were able to accomplish something this year that hadn’t been done since (ECU) went to the Lone Star, but we’re not going to be comfortable and relax. We’ve still got a lot to accomplish.”

No. 5 West Texas A&M (8-3) at No. 4 Central Missouri (9-2), 12 p.m. CT
The Buffaloes, who made four straight postseason appearances from 2005-08, have returned to the NCAA playoffs after a one-year absence fresh off a dominating 52-21 defeat over East Central in which they amassed a school single-game record 735 yards total offense. WTAMU ranks second in Division II in both passing (416.36) and total offense (529.18), while scoring 42.64 points per game for fourth in the nation behind senior quarterback Taylor Harris, who is a Harlon Hill Trophy finalist.
The Mules are back in the NCAA playoffs for the first time since 2002 with the help of stellar play by Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Year Eriz Czerniewski. The senior quarterback, also a Harlon Hill Trophy finalist, led the league in passing with 4,150 yards (377.3 ypg) and 34 touchdowns. He is the conference’s all-time leader in passing yards (11,790) and tops the nation in passing yards this season. UCM is hosting an NCAA playoff game for the first time in school history, and is making its’ second overall NCAA appearance.
No. 6 Missouri Western State (8-3) at No. 3 Northwest Missouri State (9-1), 12 p.m. CT
The Griffons have advanced to the NCAA playoffs for the second time in program history and first time since 2006 after concluding the regular season with three straight wins. For their efforts, the Griffons earned a rematch with defending national champion and fellow MIAA member Northwest Missouri State, which defeated Missouri Western 42-0 earlier this season. Northwest leads the series 20-10, and has won the last seven meetings, but this will be the first postseason match-up between the two schools.
The Bearcats are making their 15th NCAA playoff appearance and 13th in the last 15 seasons. They have advanced to the NCAA championship game in each of the last five years. After losing its season-opener to Lone Star Conference foe Texas A&M-Kingsville, Northwest has reeled off nine straight victories. With a win over the Griffons, the Bearcats will have a chance at redemption as second-seeded TAMUK awaits as a second-round opponent.

LSC Basketball Weekly Release - LSC Office
A majority of Lone Star Conference basketball teams began action last week, with 13 of those remaining unbeaten early in the 2010-11 season.
The LSC men have a 15-7 overall record so far this season, including a 7-3 mark in the South Division and 8-4 in the North. In the NCAA South Central Region, the men’s teams are currently 7-2 combined versus Heartland Conference teams and 4-2 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).
The LSC women are 10-10 overall, with a 3-7 mark in the South and 7-3 in the North this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the women’s teams are currently 4-5 combined versus Heartland Conference squads and 1-1 against the MIAA.

NORTH MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Shane Carroll, University of Central Oklahoma, JR, Guard, Mustang, Okla., Mustang HS
Carroll led a balanced attack for UCO in a two-game sweep at the South High Desert/South Central Challenge in Las Vegas, averaging 14.0 points while shooting 50 percent (5-of-10) from 3-point range and 87.5 percent (7-of-8) from the free throw line. He scored 12 points with a pair of treys in an 85-56 rout of Southwest Baptist and then scored 12 of his team-high 16 points in the final five minutes against Central Missouri as UCO overcame a nine-point deficit to win 82-79. Carroll hit a 3-pointer to put the Bronchos ahead to stay at 71-68 with 2:12 left and then made four straight free throws in the final 25 seconds as UCO held on.
NORTH MEN’S DEFENSIVE
Jarrod McDaniel, University of Central Oklahoma, JR, Guard, Midwest City, Okla., Midwest City HS
Junior point guard keyed UCO’s defensive efforts in a sweep of MIAA rivals Southwest Baptist and Central Missouri at the High Desert/South Central Challenge in Las Vegas. McDaniel’s defensive efforts led the way as the Bronchos limited the two teams to 32.8 percent shooting, including just 23.9 percent from 3-point range. He had three points and four assists in an 85-56 rout of SBU and seven points and four assists in an 82-79 win over UCM.
SOUTH MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Rod Little, West Texas A&M University, JR, Guard, Moss Point, Miss., Moss Point HS
Little averaged 19.5 points over the first two games of the season. He tallied 19 points, including a three-pointer with five seconds remaining to give the Buffs a 70-67 win over Emporia State. He then followed with a 20-point performance against Newman in a 83-68 overtime victory. Defensively, Little is also averaging 2.0 steals per game, having recorded three against Newman and one against ESU.
SOUTH MEN’S DEFENSIVE
Aaron Edwards, Eastern New Mexico University, JR, Forward, Long Beach, Calif., San Berardino Valley College
Edwards turned in a dominant performance against Northern New Mexico last week, making his Greyhound debut with a double-double (16 points, 18 rebounds). He had eight defensive rebounds, a blocked shot and three steals. In the first half alone, Edwards had nine points, 10 rebounds and two steals. He helped preserve the tight win for the Hounds, registering five rebounds in the final 8:37 of play.
NORTH WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Brooke Shepherd, Texas Woman’s University, SR, Guard, Argyle, Texas
Shepherd led the team in scoring with 18.0 points per game while shooting 50.0 percent from the floor and 56.5 percent from the three-point range. She was named to the 2010 Disney’s West Coast Tip-Off Classic All-Tournament team after leading the Pioneers to 2-1 record including wins over #11 UC San Diego and #13 Alaska Anchorage. The Pioneers finished in a three-way tie for first place. Shepherd played all 40 minutes against UCSD and scored a game-high 23 points while 6-for-8 from the three-point range. Shepherd then added 18 points against Alaska Anchorage while hitting all three shots from behind the arc. She also led the team in minutes in three games.
NORTH WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Jeanee’ Thompson, Texas Woman’s University, JR, Forward, College Station, Texas, St. Joseph HS
Thompson averaged a double-double with 13.3 points and 10.7 rebounds and was named to the 2010 Disney’s West Coast Tip-Off Classic All-Tournament team. She recorded her first career double-double with a team-high 14 points and a game and career-high 13 rebounds against Grand Canyon. Thompson then added 9 points and game-high 11 rebounds in an upset win over #11 UC San Diego. In the win over #13 Alaska Anchorage, she chipped in career-high 17 points and 8 rebounds. Thompson cleared 26 defensive rebounds in three games.
SOUTH WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Jamie Simmons, West Texas A&M University, JR, Forward, Houston, Texas, Jones HS
Simmons averaged 20.0 points a contest while leading the #7 Lady Buffs to a pair of wins over St. Mary’s and Central Missouri this past weekend. Simmons led all players in both games, scoring 19 points in the win over the Rattlers and then finishing off the weekend with a 21-point effort against the Jennies. WT found themselves down by one point with just a little over 3:00 left until Simmons’ jumper put the Lady Buffs on top, giving WT a 60-59 lead that propelled the Lady Buffs to a 10-2 run to close out the UCM game. She recorded her first double-double of the season against STMU and finished the weekend averaging 8.5 rebounds a game. She shot just over 53 percent from the field on the weekend and dished out a pair of assists as well.
SOUTH WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Kiara Wright, Tarleton State University, FR, Center, Pittsburg, Texas, Pittsburg HS
Wright made her Tarleton debut Saturday, Nov. 13 in the TexAnns’ 74-46 pummeling of Texas Wesleyan. The freshman out of Pittsburg, Texas came off the bench to record two steals and a block for Tarleton, as well as grabbed four rebounds. Besides being a defensive force inside, Wright scored six points and added two assists to the TexAnns’ efforts. Wright helped Tarleton hold Texas Wesleyan to a 29.4 shooting percentage from the floor.

The West Texas A&M Lady Buffs entered this volleyball season without much senior experience.
Outside hitter Lauren Thedford played in all 21 of the Lady Buffs' NCAA tournament games last year but wasn't a go-to player. Setter Teresa Dunn never reached the court during the postseason.
But those two were charged this year with leading eight freshmen, five sophomores and three juniors - two of whom transferred from junior colleges.
"We did have a young team, and (Dunn and I) had to step up and lead them and show them how we do it at WT," Thedford said.

MSU Women's Soccer: Mustangs place six on Daktronics All-South Central Region squad - MSU Sports Informaion
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State placed six players on the Daktronics All-South Central Region Team by the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America with voting powered by AthleticSite.com.
Forward Lindsay Pritchard, defenders Hanna Staley and Kendra Clemons and goalkeeper Mallory Whitworth gained first-team honors and will move onto the ballot for the All-America team which is set for release later this month.
Pritchard the Mustangs with 10 goals and five assists including game winners against Nebraska-Omaha and Newman (Kan.). The junior from Whitehouse garnered first-team All-LSC honors.
Staley also gained 2010 Lone Star Conference Defender of the Year honors, while Clemons is a four-time all-conference performer and earned NSCAA all-region accolades in each of the last two seasons.
Whitworth led the LSC with a 0.52 goals against average during the regular season on her way to eight shutouts.
Junior forward Kelsey Hill and senior midfielder Brittany Subia earned second-team honors.
Midwestern State claimed its first regular season LSC championship since 1998 and advanced to the NCAA Division II postseason for the first time in school. The Mustangs finished with a 16-4 record.

MSU Men's Soccer: Herrera named Daktronics South Central Player of the Year - MSU Sports Information
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State's Raul Herrera was named Daktronics South Central Region Player of the Year as released Tuesday afternoon by the College Sports Information Directors of America with voting powered by AthleticSite.com.
Herrera, a 2009 Daktronics first-team All-America, led the nation's top defense while posting a 0.50 goals against average this season. The Dallas native has posted a 30-3-7 mark with a program-record 20 shutouts in three season at MSU.
Herrera was joined on the first team by junior center back Ryan Spence and junior midfielder Nathan Fitzgerald.
Spence, a 2009 second-team Daktronics All American, once again played a key role as captain on NCAA Division II's best back line as the Mustangs finished second in the nation in shutout percentage with 11 clean sheets.
Fitzgerald scored five goals and added four assists as the kingpin of the one of the potent offensive attacks in NCAA Division II.
No. 2 Midwestern State remains the lone unbeaten side in NCAA Division II with an 18-0-2 mark. The Mustangs battle Chico State (Calif.) for the right to advance to their second Final Four appearance in the last four years.
Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. (Central Time) from University Soccer Stadium Saturday afternoon in Chico, Calif.
