Lone Star Conference regular season champion Midwestern State had six first-team selections on the All-LSC women’s soccer team announced Wednesday evening during the championship banquet in Wichita Falls, Texas.
MSU totaled nine selections with three honorable mention picks as well, while Abilene Christian had eight honorees with four first-teamers, one second-team and three honorable mention choices.
Angelo State had six picks with two second-teamers and four honorable mention selections, while Incarnate Word, Texas Woman’s and West Texas A&M each added five.
Central Oklahoma, TWU and WTAMU all added one first-team recipient to round out the 14-person team.
The Mustangs earned three individual awards including Goalkeeper of the Year Mallory Whitworth, Defensive Player of the Year Hanna Staley and Coach of the Year Jeff Trimble.
ACU’s Andrea Carpenter earned Offensive Player and Freshman of the Year honors.
On the first team were MSU’s Staley, Lindsay Pritchard, Kelsey Hill, Kendra Clemons, Brittany Subia and Whitworth, ACU’s Lexi Stirling, Carpenter, Ashley Holton and Julie Coppedge, UCO’s McKenzie Caldwell, TWU’s Natalie Holovach and WTAMU’s Nadia James.
Altogether, 56 student-athletes were recognized with the all-conference honors program, including at least one player from all 12 women’s soccer teams in the league.

ACU's Nelson headlines academic awards
Abilene Christian’s senior midfielder Anastasia Nelson was named Lone Star Conference Academic Player of the Year as conference officials announced the women’s soccer academic awards during the LSC Championship banquet on Wednesday.
Nelson, a communications major, has a flawless 4.0 cumulative grade point average. After missing last season with an injury, she has returned and played every game for the Wildcats. The senior has played a big part in an ACU defense that has pitched seven shutouts and held opponents to only 15 goals on the season.
Nelson is one of four Wildcats on the All-Academic team. She is joined on the 11-member group by players from Texas A&M-Commerce, Angelo State, Northeastern State, Midwestern State, Incarnate Word and Texas Woman’s.
The All-Academic team is chosen by the league’s sports information directors, who select players on the basis of both athletic and academic achievement. To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must have played in at least 50 percent of team’s contests, reached sophomore athletic and academic standing (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen are not eligible), completed at least one full academic year at the nominating institution, and have a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade point average based on the 4.0 system for his/her entire collegiate career.
ACU had four players on the team with Julie Coppedge, Courtney Wilson and Alyse Ritche joining Nelson. MSU was represented by two players - Kelsey Hill and Alyssa Dillman.
Also earning spots on the squad were the A&M-C’s Randi Hafele, ASU’s Lauren Carnes, NSU’s Melissa Michelsen, UIW’s Keri Dawson and TWU’s Madisen Burrows.

LSC Women's Soccer Weekly Release
The 2010 Lone Star Conference women’s soccer championship kicks off tomorrow in Wichita Falls, Texas. Midwestern State 15-2 overall and 10-1 in the LSC, is the top seed for the six-team, single elimination conference championship.
Abilene Christian also earned a first-round bye as the runner-up with a 9-2 league record. The championship begins on Thursday, Nov. 4, at 12 p.m. with No. 3 Angelo State playing No. 6 Texas A&M-Commerce. The 2:30 p.m. game matches No. 4 Incarnate Word against No. 5 Central Oklahoma.
The ASU/A&M-C winner advances to play ACU at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, while the UIW/UCO victor plays MSU at 7:30 p.m. The Friday winners get a day off before playing on Sunday at 1 p.m. for the LSC Championship and an automatic bid into the NCAA Division II tournament.
LSC to air Soccer Championship games live
The Lone Star Conference Soccer Championship this week will be shown live via internet video streaming online, league officials announced.

Last week of regular season for men
MSU leads the men with a 5-0-1 LSC record, WTAMU is currently in second with a 4-3-0 in the league and UIW men round out the third spot with a 3-2-2 LSC record. The men continue to play in hopes of earning a berth in the NCAA Division II tournament. The men close out their regular season this week.

Callum Riley, University of the Incarnate Word, Jr., F, Leicester, England, Lutterworth Grammar School The Cardinals’ leading scorer, Callum Riley, scored four goals in two games this past weekend. Against West Texas A&M, Riley arched a free kick from nearly 30 yards out into the upper-90 for UIW’s lone goal on Friday. On Sunday against Eastern New Mexico, he scored twice in the opening 12 minutes (the first 50 seconds into the game) and added a third in the second half as the Cardinals dominated the Greyhounds, 4-0.

Ryan Spence, Midwestern State University, Jr., D, Decatur, Texas, Decatur HS Spence tallied an assist while helping the nation’s top defense to its 10th and 11th shutouts in wins over Northeastern State and St. Thomas last weekend at the MSU Soccer Field.
WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Summer Grantham, University of Central Oklahoma, So., MF, Norman, OK, Norman HS Grantham scored a pair of goals to lead UCO to two crucial league victories over the weekend. The sophomore midfielder scored with just 22 seconds left to play to lift the Bronchos to a 2-1 win over West Texas A&M on Friday and had the second goal in UCO’s 3-0 season-ending victory over Eastern New Mexico Sunday.
WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Hanna Staley, Midwestern State University, So., D, Austin, Texas, McNeil HS Staley’s solid play at center back helped Midwestern State to its sixth and seventh shutouts of the season in wins over Texas Woman’s University and Texas A&M-Commerce to help the Mustangs clinch their first regular season conference championship since 1998. MSU limited the Pioneers and Lions to a total of 18 shots.
WOMEN’S GOALKEEPER
Mallory Whitworth, Midwestern State University, So., GK, McKinney, Texas, McKinney HS Whitworth made eight saves in 170 scoreless minutes between the posts to help Midwestern State clinch its first Lone Star Conference regular season championship since 1998 with shutout wins over Texas Woman’s University and Texas A&M-Commerce. The sophomore from McKinney tops the conference with a 0.52 goals against average is third in the LSC with seven shutouts.
The 2010 Lone Star Conference Women's Soccer Championship will be played as a single elimination tournament on Novmber 4, 5 and 7 at the MSU Soccer Field on the campus of Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas.
The winner of the conference tournament claims the LSC championship and the league's automatic qualifying position into the NCAA Division II Championships.
The Facility
The MSU Soccer Field is located near the corner of Louis J. Rodriguez Blvd. and Midwestern Pkwy. on the campus of Midwestern State University.Limited parking is available behind the grandstand on the West side of the facility with more spacious parking on the East side or bench side of the field.
All fan and spectator entry must be made on the grandstand (west) side of the facility. No outside food or pets are permitted in the facility.

Tickets
Tickets will be available at the gate at the cost of $5 for general admission and $3 for students (primary, secondary and college with valid identification) and senior citizens (ages 65-up).As with NCAA postseason, no free student admission or other passes will be honored.

The regular season is behind us now and all the hopes, dreams and optimism of the preseason has given way to the realities of the results:

Graduation, injuries, luck, recruiting, coaching all impacted the difference in perception and reality over the past 90 days. West Texas, the pre-season favorite, failed to make the tournament for the first time since the tourney started. Central Oklahoma, the #2 pick and 2009 tourney winner, uses a young roster to finish 5th. Midwestern has dominated their regular season run and looks very strong (and gets to play at home). UIW, a historical power in the Heartland conference, finished 7-4 – and in the position the preseason poll projected. ACU found their offense in a transfer and true freshman and takes a step up. TWU prepped for the conference season with a very strong preseason schedule, but lost a string of one goal games. Commerce fought their way into the tourney and will carry that attitude forward. Angelo surprised everyone and is the only team to have bested Midwestern in the regular season. SWOSU finished where they were picked, but as Mark Persson adds his type of player, they will improve. ENMU finished close to their preseason projection. NSU surprised some people late in the season. ECU (please lose the gimmicky offsides trap) finished where predicted.

Mustangs remain atop NCAA II South Central Region rankings - MSU Sports Information
Midwestern State remained atop the South Central Region rankings for the fourth consecutive week Tuesday when the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Committee issued its weekly release.
The Mustangs remain the lone unbeaten side in NCAA Division II men's soccer with a perfect 14-0-2 mark and are trailed by Truman State (Mo.) (10-2-1), Incarnate Word (Texas) (11-2-3) and West Texas A&M (10-5-1).
The top two teams of the South Central and Central regions square off for its respective championship on Thursday, Nov. 11 at the home site of the No. 1 seeds.
The winners advance to the site of the highest remaining seed with the South Central receiving preference on Sunday, Nov. 14 for a national quarterfinal berth against the winner of the West Region.
The national quarterfinals are slated for Nov. 21 at the site of the highest remaining seed with preference to the South Central/Central regions.
The winner advances to the Final Four which is set for Dec. 2-4 as part of the NCAA Division II Fall Sports Festival in Louisville, Ky.
Colorado Mines (15-1-1) leads the Central Region followed by Regis (Colo.) (13-2-3), Fort Lewis (Colo.) (11-4-2) and Metro State (Colo.) (11-5-2).
Cal State-San Bernardino (13-4-1) leads West followed by Chico State (Calif.) (13-5-0), Grand Canyon (Ariz.) (12-2-2), Cal State-Dominguez Hills (11-4-2), Notre Dame de Namur (12-2-2) and Sonoma State (Calif.) (11-5-1).
Midwestern State closes the regular season on the road at Eastern New Mexico on Friday and at West Texas A&M on Sunday.
