When August rolled in, Jonathon Woodson was pretty much content knowing that he would be contributing on Texas A&M-Kingsville’s special teams, perhaps catching a few passes as part of a deep stable of wide receivers.
Fast-forward to November and, after a couple of factors came into play, the sophomore from Missouri City has emerged as the featured running back for the fourth-ranked NCAA Division II team in the country.
“I thought I’d just play my role on the special teams and be happy doing that, and helping out the offense when I could,” Woodson said.
As things have transpired, Woodson has been a bigger help on offense than anyone could have envisioned.

There was no ceiling as to how far Texas A&M-Kingsville’s cross country teams could rise this season. Unfortunately for the Javelinas, the reason for that was the fact both the men’s and women’s squads have had a whole lot of ground to cover.
It has been with small steps that the Javelinas have taken to plant seeds that eventually will reap cross country rewards. There were few morsels on which to munch this season but there was enough progress by the young squads to encourage second-year coach Ryan Dall.
“I’m definitely excited with how the season’s gone. Like I said, we’ve been struggling just to beat one team since I’ve been here for both men and women,” Dall said. “But this year I feel like we’re definitely competitive with the other teams in the conference, especially on the women’s side. I think we can compete with anybody in the conference this year, which is a big step up for us. One through six, we’re solid.
“In the past we’ve had a couple of good individuals and had to fill in with some track runners and stuff like that. So this is the first year really I can say we have a full cross country team, men and women,” Dall said. “I think we’ll be much more competitive, which is good. That was the goal coming in to the year, to have a team that was competitive at the conference meet and try and get a couple of individuals up there who can do some good things as well.”

West Texas A&M came into Moody Coliseum sporting an NCAA Division II record 78-match win streak in Lone Star Conference play, yet the unranked Lady Buffs found themselves with their backs against the wall.
Abilene Christian, at No. 20 was the higher ranked team in both the national and regional rankings, and everyone seemed to think this was the Wildcats’ year to finally beat WT.
No so fast. Lauren Thedford and Ashley Davis had 11 kills each, and the Lady Buffs beat ACU 3-0 on Thursday before a crowd of 1,634 to take sole possession of the LSC lead with one match remaining in the regular season.
“It’s kind of nice to be the underdog every once in a while, because you’ve got to something to prove,” Thedford said. “Everyone was thinking we couldn’t do it. We’re out to prove them that they’re wrong. We’ve got some spunk, and we’re ready to prove it to everybody.”

Mustangs drop TSU for third straight win - Times Record News
Midwestern State jumped on Tarleton State for the first 12 points in Lone Star Conference action Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The Mustangs then used a strong defense and a stellar group-attack effort to bury the TexAnns 25-10, 20-25, 25-19, 25-22 to claim their third straight victory. With the win, MSU closes the regular season at 15-13 and clinches the No. 4 seed in next week’s LSC Championships.
If Tarleton (21-9, 7-6) closes the regular season with a win at Cameron on Saturday, it will face MSU again in the opening round of the conference tournament.

ASU SOCCER: 'Belles make history - San Angelo Standard Times
The Angelo State University soccer team won its first postseason contest in program history with a 2-0 victory over Texas A&M-Commerce Thursday at the MSU Soccer Field in Wichita Falls in the first round of the Lone Star Conference postseason tournament.
Melanie Peterson collected her ninth shutout for the Rambelles, setting a new ASU single-season record.
The ‘Belles (13-5-1, 9-2) faced a strong headwind for the first 45 minutes of play. ASU was backpedaling for the first 10 minutes as Texas A&M-Commerce (8-7-3, 4-4-3) pushed offensively and had five quick corner kicks during the span.
LSC soccer: ACU to open against first-round winner Angelo State - Abilene Reporter News
Angelo State got goals with Ashley Brown and Brandie DeBacker, both scoring after mishandled balls by the Texas A&M-Commerce goal keeper, to defeat the Lions 2-0 in a Lone Star Conference soccer tournament first-round match.
ASU advances to play No. 2 Abilene Christian, which defeated the Rambelles 3-1 in San Angelo during LSC regular season play.
The ACU-Angelo State match is at 5 p.m. today at the Midwestern State Soccer Field.
Central Oklahoma beat Incarnate Word 3-1 and will face the top-seeded Mustangs at 7:30 tonight in the other semifinal.
MSU gets Central Okla. in semifinals - Times Record News
The Lone Star Conference champion Midwestern State Mustangs open play in the LSC Championships at 7:30 tonight at the MSU Soccer Field.
The 19th-ranked Mustangs (15-2) will meet No. 5-seeded Central Oklahoma in the day’s second semifinal. The Bronchos (10-7-1) advanced with a 3-1 win over Incarnate Word in Thursday’s first-round match.
MSU won the regular-season matchup between the two teams 3-0.
The other semifinal match will put second-seeded Abilene Christian (14-3) against third-seeded Angelo State (13-5-1) at 5 p.m.
The two semifinal winners will meet at 1 p.m. Sunday for the title and spot in the NCAA Division II playoffs.
Women's Soccer Championship: ASU, UCO advance to semifinals - LSC Office

Angelo State took advantage of a pair of Texas A&M-Commerce to put away the Lions 2-0 in the opening round of the Lone Star Conference Championships Thursday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.
The Rambelles (13-5-1) struck in the 14th minute after Texas A&M-Commerce goalkeeper Randi Hafele mishandled a free kick allowing Ashley Brown to collect the ball and find the open net for her seventh goal of the season.

Both teams kept a defensive posture throughout much of the match until Angelo State put away the match when the Lions once again mishandled the ball in the 18-yard box allowing Brandie DeBacker to score put away with her 10th goal of the season in the 89th minute.
The Rambelles move on to face No. 2-seed Abilene Christian in the LSC Championship semifinals Friday afternoon at 5 p.m.
Texas A&M-Commerce closes the season at 8-7-3.
Central Oklahoma 3, Incarnate Word 1
Central Oklahoma blitzed Incarnate Word for two second half to goals to life the Bronchos to a 3-1 win to advance in the Lone Star Conference Championships Thursday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.
The Bronchos (11-7-1) will face host Midwestern State in the semifinal round Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
Sophomore Summer Grantham collected a loose ball in the middle box to bang in her sixth goal of the season to give Central Oklahoma a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute.

Incarnate Word struck back for the equalizer in the 37th minute on a breakaway goal by Sarah Hernandez for her eighth tally of the campaign to send the match tied 1-1 into the intermission.
Central Oklahoma surged ahead in the 71st minute when Ashton Morris took a through ball from Stephanie Fleig to put the Bronchos up 2-1 before Brittni Walker buried the Cardinals with a flick of Lizzie Merritt's free kick from 30 yards to give UCO a commanding two-goal lead.
The Bronchos outshot Incarnate Word by a 21-15 margin including a 15-7 edge in the second half.
Incarnate Word ends the season at 9-7-2.

Minus-eight in rebounding. Thirty-four personal fouls. Seventeen turnovers.
Midwestern State won’t ever win a third straight Lone Star Conference championship with stats like that.
But the Mustangs also won’t have to play a top 20 Division I team to get there.
Yes, both Baylor and MSU were Elite Eight teams last season. But face it — they live in completely different neighborhoods.
And D-I and the Big 12 Conference is a huge step up from D-II and the LSC.
So let’s not judge MSU too hard on its 68-59 loss to the Bears here Thursday night.
