LSC Softball: Four tabbed for weekly honors
League play started last week for Lone Star Conference softball teams. Angelo State, Texas Woman’s and Tarleton State each swept its three-game series to jump to the top of the standings. In addition to another round of LSC games, teams have a few non-conference games on tap this week.
LSC softball teams are 123-76 overall this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the LSC is currently 78-45 overall including 39-17 combined versus Heartland Conference teams, 17-9 opposed to the Great American Conference, 19-13 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) and 3-6 versus independent teams.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
CO-HITTER
Arianna Rodriguez, Tarleton State University, JR, INF, Bruceville-Eddy, Texas, Bruceville-Eddy HS
Rodriguez was an offensive power for the TexAnns, who swept the No. 2 team in the nation last weekend to open LSC play. The junior shortstop was 6-10 (.600) at the plate with a pair of home runs and five RBIs - including the go-ahead home run in the bottom of the sixth to complete the sweep of No. 2 West Texas A&M Saturday afternoon. Rodriguez slugged a team high 1.200, recorded a team high 12 total bases and scored a team-high four runs over the three-game series.
Kacie Easley, Angelo State University, JR, Catcher, Temple, Texas, Temple HS
Easley helped guide the Belles to a flawless 7-0 last week, in part to some timely hitting. The junior hit .522 (12-of-23) with a team high 25 total bases and scored eight runs with six RBIs during the seven-day stretch. The starting catcher belted three home runs, two doubles and a triple during the stretch, while slugging 1.087. The Temple native is now second on the team in homers (7), doubles (6) and RBIs (21).
CO-PITCHER
Samantha Swanda, Tarleton State University, SR, Pitcher, Apache, Okla., Apache HS
Swanda dominated the No. 2 team in the nation in two of the three games over the weekend. In the series opener, the senior allowed just two earned runs in the complete game victory before coming out the next day to pitch the series finale. In the finale, Swanda pitched a complete-game one-hitter with the only West Texas run coming as an unearned run. Swanda struck out 15 batters in 14 innings, including punching out the final Lady Buff in both of her starts. She held WT to just a .128 batting average in 14 innings of work.
Caitlyn Crain, Abilene Christian University, JR, RHP, Ft. Worth, Texas, Saginaw HS
Crain again pitched well this weekend, going 2-0 vs. Incarnate Word with three strikeouts and a 1.29 ERA through 14 innings. Crain is now 7-0 on the season and her ERA of 1.19 is ranked among the best in the Lone Star Conference. In her game one start vs. the Cardinals, Crain allowed two runs on three hits through the first four innings but settled down afterward as she retired 11 of the final 13 batters. Meanwhile, her offense, scored four unanswered runs from the fifth to seventh innings. In her game three start Saturday, Crain retired the first 11 batters she faced and didn’t surrender her first hit - an infield single - of the ball game until there were two outs in the sixth. She allowed a second hit in the seventh, but left that runner stranded following two consecutive fly outs that ended the game. The two Cardinal runs were unearned in the sixth as their No. 8 and 1 batters both reached on errors.
