With a 31-degree wind chill, the annual West Texas A&M Maroon-White spring football game was anything but springlike Thursday on Happy State Bank Field at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.
Brantley impressive as Javelinas end scrimmage - George Vondracek, Corpus Christi Caller Times
On Saturday, when the first half of Texas A&M-Kingsville's spring football game took place, Dean Brantley had what had to be considered a less-than-stellar outing. During Thursday night's final two quarters that brought the Javelinas' spring workouts to a close, it was a different matter for Brantley.

CANYON, Texas - Junior quarterback Dustin Vaughan passed for 133 yards and redshirt-freshman Geremy Alridge rushed for 112 yards to help lead the Maroon squad to a 28-21 victory over the White, Thursday night in the annual Maroon-White contest held at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.
“This was the most evenly played Spring Game we’ve had since I’ve been here,” said WT head coach Don Carthel. “I was very pleased with the game, overall. We had a lot of big plays and great competition tonight. I thought the offensive lines on both teams did a great job of protecting the passers. I was concerned about that coming into tonight, but they showed that they can block and protect.”
Vaughan (Jr., Corpus Christi, TX) completed 11 of 18 passes for 133 yards, with one touchdown and one interception thrown. His TD strike was a 17-yarder to Torrence Allen (Jr., Meridian, TX). Allen finished the evening with seven receptions for 99 yards and one TD. The Maroon squad also enjoyed a solid rushing performance by Alrdige (R-Fr., Dallas, TX), who carried 13 times for 112 yards, with many of his yards coming on quick strikes up the middle.
The White team was led by quarterback Luke Halpin’s passing. The Mesquite, TX, junior completed 11 of 19 passes for 200 yards and a pair of TDs. His touchdown passes were a 16-yarder to Aarrhon Flores (Sr., Floydada, TX) and a 65 yard catch and run by Lance Ratliff (Jr., Lubbock, TX).
Ratliff led the White squad in receiving, with five catches for 87 yards and one TD, while Flores contributed four catches for 49 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, Maroon lineman Larry Dowdell (Sr., Birmingham, AL) was active in the backfield, registering a pair of sacks, two tackles for lost yardage and a quarterback hurry, while defensive back Curtis Slater enjoyed five tackles and an interception for the White squad.
Football Closes out Spring Schedule - TAMK Football
KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The 2012 Spring Football season came to a conclusion on Thursday night for Texas A&M-Kingsville inside Javelina Stadium with the second half of their annual Spring Game. The Blue team defeated the White team 43-29 after taking a 27-6 halftime lead.
The first half of the Spring Game was played on Saturday. The top players for the Blue in the first half were wide receiver Clyde Lee, running back Anthony Johnson and linebacker Justin Young. Lee had five catches for 95 yards and scored a touchdown. Johnson carried the ball 11 times for 67 yards and two scores. Young led a spirited defensive effort with three sacks and three forced fumbles.
The White team was unable to get much going on Saturday. Running back Randall Toney had a solid performance with seven carries for 50 yards while defensive back James Gilbert picked off two passes.
On Thursday night, the White team dominated possession. They picked up 20 first downs and accumulated 304 yards of offense. Toney picked up 66 more yards on the ground on 10 carries and had two catches for 23 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Dean Brantley had an outstanding half going 15-of-24 for 148 yards and two touchdowns after a tough first half. Tight end Chandler Hill led the receiving corp with five catches for 56 yards while Robert Armstrong had four catches for 22 yards and a touchdown.
The White defense was led by Gilbert who had six tackles on the night and Cliff Baker who picked off a pass in the red zone. The Blue offense received strong play from a pair of quarterbacks. Bryan Ehrlich went 6-of-9 for 116 yards, a touchdown and an interception while Aaron Bueno rushed for 46 yards on three carries and scored a touchdown. Bueno tossed a touchdown pass on Saturday as well. Ehrlich connected with Shane Prater and Sherman Batiste on 43-yard bombs with Batiste’s ending in the end zone.
The Blue defense was led by Anthony Forker who made 12 tackles and broke up a pass in one half of play.
