Daily Football Roundup 10-2

Javs to face 2nd straight unbeaten

By George Vondracek

Bo Atterberry's Texas A&M-Kingsville football club hits the road for the fifth time in six weekends when the Javelinas head for Tarleton State for Saturday's Lone Star Conference South Division football game. Atterberry won't know for sure until after the ballgame, but the bar likely won't be lowered much from last week's tussle with No. 5 West Texas A&M or the season opener against NCAA Division I-AA North Dakota.

"They've put up some really good numbers offensively and defensively, they've got one of the best," Atterberry said of the 13th-ranked Texans. "I'd say they're in that class. I don't know who does all those polls and rankings, but they've got them in those slots for a reason. They've been there the last couple of years, and they continue to be a good football team."

Rams, Greyhounds in similar situation heading into Saturday matchup

By Nathan Wright

The Eastern New Mexico University football team is just as hungry for a win as Angelo State.

With a combined three victories between the two schools and both coming off losses in their Lone Star Conference Division openers last Saturday, this week's matchup is a crucial one for both teams to keep pace with the rest of the division - of which four teams are nationally ranked.

Players' wives adjust to lives that revolve around sports in fall

By Greg Jaklewicz

When a team is winning, every fan wants to know a player. The personal relationship makes it more special.

But talking to a player after a game or sitting by one in class is different from being married to a college athlete.

Several West Texas A&M football players are married, including starting quarterback Keith Null. All-purpose back Seth Hayden is married to Ashley, and the couple has a boy, Kobe, who's 21-months-old.

Tailback rushes to foreground

Bob Forrest Sports Writer

Coming out of preseason camp in August, East Central University football coach Kurt Nichols figured to have the same tailback-by-committee he had used in his first two years as coach of the Tigers. The committee just figured to be a little bit bigger.

Since Nichols took over the ECU football program in December 2005, running the football has always been something of an afterthought in his pass-first spread offense. After being one of the best in the Lone Star Conference North Division at running the ball during the first five years of this decade with all-conference tailbacks Jerome Castleberry and King Bennett leading the way, the Tigers in 2006 and 2007 ranked at or near the bottom -- in rushing, scoring and victories -- of a league where success running the football has historically translated into more wins than losses.

This fall, though, Nichols seemed to have the weapons in the backfield to, if not change, at least alter his team’s offensive identity. His tailback rotation was the deepest since he took the ECU job in the fall of 2005 and, while the Tiger running backs didn’t figure to stir memories of Castleberry and Bennett, they at least seemed capable of providing a suitable complement to all-conference quarterback Marcus Johnson and his receiving corps.

Calloway leading the way for Mustangs

By J Scott Russell

With 21 starts over the last two seasons, Midwestern State’s Lance Calloway is second on the team in experience, trailing only linebacker Darius Bortters.

And when it comes to experience among the offensive linemen, he has 19 more starts than the next lineman on the list.

But those starts were at left guard and the 6-2, 275-pound junior is now making his home at center for the Mustangs.

A&M-Commerce heads out on road again

By David Claybourn

Win on the road.

That’s still a big goal this football season for the 2-3 Texas A&M University-Commerce Lions, who are 2-0 at Memorial Stadium but 0-3 on the road.

The Lions head out again this weekend for their second of four straight away games. A&M-Commerce heads this time to Tahlequah, Okla., to face a Northeastern State team that is 0-5 for the season and has been outscored 164-79 by its opponents.
