Perkins' play no joke for Javelinas

By George Vondracek

KINGSVILLE -- One glance around the Texas A&M-Kingsville football practice field or locker room and you can tell Jabir Perkins is a happy camper.

Juking, jiving and dancing at practice, chattering all the time, Perkins has found a fit with the Javelinas after a split from his previous confines at fellow Lone Star Conference school Southeastern (Okla.) State.

"Jabir Perkins is a character. We all love him," said A&M-Kingsville defensive end Jimmy Lugo, a junior from Alice. ". . . He's something else. . . . He's come on. He's been a big playmaker."

By Greg Jaklewicz

The D-train will be pulling back into the station tonight.

West Texas A&M will spotlight three former athletes, including Dewayne Miles, and a sports information director at its Hall of Champions dinner as part of homecoming weekend events.

"It's a big honor," said Miles, who will be able to attend the event. Now an assistant coach at Memphis High, his Cyclones do not play tonight.

Also to be honored are soccer player Davy Arnaud, Lady Buffs basketball standout Leona Gerber, and Amarilloan Ray M. Franks, who was employed at WT from 1954-1963.

No. 13 Texans meet ‘road warriors’ in LSC South opener

By Brad Keith

So far, so good through five games for No. 13 Tarleton State.

Now comes the tough part.

Tarleton cruised past four Oklahoma schools from the Lone Star Conference North Division before escaping with a late comeback against a fifth - Southwestern Oklahoma - last week. Three of the five wins counted in the LSC standings.

Tarleton’s victims have a combined record of only 4-21, however, and with LSC South Division play beginning for the Texans this week, the schedule only gets more difficult.
