Tarleton hosts largest Midnight Madness in school history

STEPHENVILLE - The Tarleton Texan and TexAnn basketball teams welcomed the largest crowd ever for a Midnight Madness even Tuesday night in Wisdom Gym.

The Tarleton cheerleaders, the Texan Stars and the Sound and the Fury Basketball Pep Band rocked the house before the women's basketball team took to the floor at 12:01 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 15. The men followed shortly thereafter.

The TexAnns warmed up before being introduced to the crowd. The team then played a five-minute scrimmage.

The Texans then took the floor for warmups, putting on a display of dunks for the enthusiastic crowd. The men were then introduced and then played a 10-minute scrimmage where mostly high-flying offense was seen on the floor (dunking included).

Both teams begin full practices Wednesday afternoon, the first day the NCAA allows teams to practice as a full squad.

Stephenville Empire-Tribune Sports Editor Brad Keith wrote the following article on this year's Midnight Madness event:

The average attendance at Lone Star Conference men’s basketball games in 2007-08 was 1,140. Tarleton State had more than double that number turn out to Wisdom Gym Tuesday night, as a mostly-student crowd of 2,382 got a sneak peak at the 2008-09 Texan and TexAnn basketball teams.

Midnight Madness was again held to officially kick off the 2008-09 basketball preseason, and Tarleton traditions new and old were on their finest display. The infamous Purple Poo were out in force, and Lonn’s Posse T-shirts were already being donned.

Just after the clock struck midnight and Tuesday gave way to Wednesday – the first day NCAA members are allowed to hold official full-team workouts – the TexAnns entered an atmosphere resembling that of the 2008 South Central Region Tournament final the Texans hosted at Wisdom Gym – the last time a Tarleton team hit the hardwood.

The amount of energy was equivalent to that put off by the Wisdom Gym crowd last March, but this time it came with a far more positive, less competitive vibe.

Midnight Madness is all about fun.
