Golf: Postseason honors announced
Abilene Christian’s Alex Carpenter and Tarleton State’s Jacqueline Lau were recognized as Lone Star Conference Players of the Year Sunday night as the league’s annual postseason golf awards were announced at the championships banquet, held in conjunction with the LSC Championships in Trophy Club, Texas.  League officials announced the all-conference teams and individual awards at the banquet. This marks the eighth year for golf’s postseason awards to be voted on by league coaches. Before, all-conference honors had been determined only by results at the LSC tournament.

Carpenter, who earned player of the year acclaim for the third straight year, won three events and had eight top-10 finishes this season. The junior is the No. 10 ranked player in NCAA Division II with an average score of 71.81.  Lau finished in the top-10 of every tournament with a 75.71 scoring average. The junior is ranked No. 11 in Division II.  ACU’s Corbin Renner earned Freshman of Year honors and the Wildcats Mike Campbell was named Coach of the Year for the third consecutive year on the men’s side.

For the women, Midwestern State’s Brenna Moore picked up Freshman of the Year honors, while the Mustangs Jeff Ray was named Coach of the Year.  Carpenter was a nearly unanimous choice on the men’s first team All-LSC along with ACU teammates Trey Sullivan and Renner, West Texas A&M’s Ben Hargis and MSU’s Derek Oland.  Joining Lau on the women’s first team All-LSC was TexAnn teammate Sharon Lau, MSU’s Moore, Incarnate Word’s Flower Castillo and WTAMU’s Alisa White.

A total of 10 more players were named to the second team for both men and women, while another three men’s players and three women’s players were recognized as honorable mention All-LSC selections.

Lau, a sophomore engineering major from Malaysia, was joined by West Texas A&M’s Alisa White, Texas A&M-Commerce’s Sara Diaz, Angelo State’s Krista Czarnecki and Midwestern State’s Kendra Whittley.

Czarnecki was a repeat selection on the All-Academic Team.

Lau is part of a TexAnn team which boasts nine top-five finishes this season including four first-place efforts.  She won the Doc Housewright Invitational and Southwest Classic individual titles.

Carpenter, a finance and management major from Little Rock, Ark., was the only men’s player eligible for academic honors. The junior was named to the all-academic team in 2011 as well.

To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average and be at least a sophomore, both academically and athletically. The Academic Player of Year award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league’s sports information directors voting on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement.
