LSC TRACK AND FIELD
The Lone Star Conference has four men’s teams in the top 25 including three in the top-seven in the national team computer rankings (April 17) conducted by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) with No. 4 Abilene Christian, No. 5 Texas A&M-Kingsville, No. 7 Angelo State and No. 23 West Texas A&M. On the women’s side, the LSC is represented by No. 13 ASU and No. 14 ACU.

MEN’S TRACK
Tommy Brown, University of the Incarnate Word, JR, Schertz, Texas, Steele HS
Brown is close to owning the Incarnate Word record book in the sprints. At the Trinity Alumni Classic last weekend he recorded the two best times ever for the Cardinals in the 100-meters. His prelim time of 10.54 set the record and gave him an NCAA provisional berth. Brown came back in the finals with a 10.57, which marked the second best time in UIW history. In the 200, Brown finished third in 22.09 which is the third-best time on the school list. He also anchored the 4x100 relay to a second place finish in a school record 40.86. The junior has anchored the four fastest 4x100 teams in UIW history.
MEN’S FIELD
Nick Jones, Abilene Christian University, SR, Amarillo, Texas, Tascosa HS
Jones moved up to third place on the all-time NCAA Division II performance list in the discus after launching a throw of 203 feet, 3 inches (61.95 meters) at Kidd Field during the UTEP Invitational. Jones’ effort ranks behind former Wildcat and 1996 Olympian Andy Kokhanovsky, who recorded the DII record of 211-5 (64.44m) at the Abilene Invitational on May 9, 1996, and 1988 Olympian Randy Heisler (204-1, 62.22m), who posted his top mark with the University of Indianapolis at the 1984 NCAA Championships. Jones also won the shot put with a push of 61-5.50 (18.73m), besting several DI opponents from Kansas, Boise State, New Mexico and Rice by more than two meters. In the discus, Jones beat Jayhawk and Kokhanovsky pupil Mason Finley by 1.82 meters. Finley has won six All-America titles during Kokhanovsky’s seven-year tenure at KU. On the season, Jones has won two shot put and discus titles, and finished among the top five two other times. He is a NCAA automatic qualifier in both events as well.
WOMEN’S TRACK
Kathy Trevino, Texas A&M University - Kingsville, FR, Rio Grande City, TX, Rio Grande City HS
Trevino was the top runner for the Javelinas at the Trinity Alumni Classic. She won the 400-meter dash in a NCAA DII provisional time of 55.17. It was her first open 400 of the season and is the top time in the conference. She took fourth in the 200-meter dash in 24.99, but was second among collegiate athletes. She also ran the third leg of the team’s 4x100-meter relay team that finished second in a season best time of 47.73.
CO-WOMEN’S FIELD
Shalania Lakey, Abilene Christian University, JR, Hamlin, Texas, Hamlin HS
Lakey recorded a personal best and NCAA provisional qualifying throw of 163-7 to place fourth in the hammer at last Saturday’s UTEP Invitational. Lakey recorded her throw on her sixth and final attempt, and finished only behind three DI throwers from Kansas and Boise State. Lakey is the first Wildcat on the women’s team this season to record a NCAA provisional mark in the hammer.
Jayda Spencer, Angelo State University, SR, Del Rio, Texas, Del Rio HS
Spencer recorded a personal-best mark in the discus and a NCAA Division II provisional mark at the Texas Tech Invitational. Her throw of 157-2 (47.92m) vaulted her into the top spot in the Lone Star Conference. Spencer is currently No. 10 in NCAA Division II.
