LSC Softball: Tarleton moves into first place - LSC Office
LSC SOFTBALL
Tarleton State took sole possession of first place in the Lone Star Conference standings, improving to 13-2 after a sweep of Eastern New Mexico. Angelo State sits a game back (12-3) despite winning two of three against Incarnate Word, while Texas Woman’s is third (11-3) after taking two games in league action with Midwestern State.
Abilene Christian claimed all three games in opposition to West Texas A&M, while Texas A&M-Kingville took the series with Cameron 2-1.
This week’s schedule includes a big series between TWU and ASU.
LSC teams are playing a single round-robin schedule with a three-game series against every other team. Each series consists of a doubleheader one day and single 7-inning game the other day.
The overall LSC Champion will be the team(s) with the best winning percentage in regular-season conference games, while the winner of the postseason championship will be recognized as LSC Tournament Champion and receive the league’s automatic qualification into the NCAA postseason. The single-elimination championship will be played April 27-28 in Denton, Texas.
LSC softball teams are 203-153 overall this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the LSC is currently 91-58 overall including 51-27 combined versus Heartland Conference teams, 17-11 opposed to the Great American Conference, 20-14 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) and 3-6 versus independent teams.
FIRST PITCH
#StolenBases - Texas Woman’s sophomore Bailey Vrazel went 10-for-10 in steal attempts and set a new school record with 59 consecutive steals. She broke her own record of 56 set in 2011. Vrazel continues to lead all collegiate softball players (NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA) in steals for the second consecutive season.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
HITTER
Lauren Smith, Angelo State University, JR, Outfield, Waxahachie, Texas, Cornerstone Christian School
Smith hit .583 during the seven-day stretch and helped lead the No. 5 Rambelles to a 3-2 week. The junior had a team-best 13 total bases, slugging 1.083 with a home run, double and triple. Her home run came in Game 1 against LSC Preseason Pitcher of the Year Briana Sanchez of Incarnate Word to help lift the Belles to a 7-1 victory. The Waxahachie native was selective at the plate, drawing five walks and ending the week with a .722 on-base percentage.
PITCHER
Peyton Mosley, Abilene Christian University, SO, RHP, Coppell, Texas, Coppell HS
Mosley recorded two wins at home last weekend versus 19th ranked West Texas A&M. Mosley allowed one run on four hits in game one vs. the Lady Buffs, and then shut them out Saturday on three hits. Mosley’s shutout was her third of the season (and first since Feb. 10) and lowered her earned-run average to 1.92. Mosley’s seven strikeouts in game one Friday served as a season high, and the three hits allowed equaled a season low for a start of 4.0 or more innings. Mosley struck out six batters to complete the three-game sweep Saturday. The only run allowed by Mosley this weekend was on a solo home run hit by Kim LeComte. Through her 14.0 innings pitched, only twice did Mosley allow two or more runners to reach base in a single inning.
