LSC Scoop Afternoon Update 4-2

LSC Baseball: League action heating up - LSC Office

West Texas A&M split with Angelo State to keep a one-game lead (9-3) in the Lone Star Conference baseball standings.  Texas A&M-Kingsville took all four games against Tarleton State to jump into second place at 8-4.
    Abilene Christian split with Eastern New Mexico, while Incarnate Word won three of the four games against Cameron in league play last week.
    This week’s schedule includes non-conference games on Tuesday, followed by a full schedule of conference action.  Each LSC series includes a 9-inning game Friday, a 7x7 doubleheader Saturday and 9-inning contest Sunday.
    The overall LSC Champion will be the team(s) with the best winning percentage in regular-season conference games, while the winner of the postseason championship will be recognized as LSC Tournament Champion and receive the league’s automatic qualification into the NCAA postseason. The championship will be played May 5-8 in San Angelo, Texas.
    LSC baseball teams are 132-100 overall this season.  In the NCAA South Central Region, the LSC is currently 37-30 overall including 15-14 combined versus Heartland Conference teams, 20-15 opposed to the Great American Conference and 2-1 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).
LEADING OFF
#Sweep - Texas A&M-Kingsville swept four straight games at Tarleton State for Javelina’s first four-game road sweep in the conference since the 2007 season.

#TriplePlay - West Texas A&M recorded a triple play in Sunday’s game against Angelo State, as the batter flied out to right field, who then doubled off the runner at first, and then tripled off the runner at third as that runner left the base early.

#SolidOffense - Eastern New Mexico split a four-game slugfest with Abilene Christian, with the teams combining for 92 runs on 119 hits.

DIAMOND PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
HITTERS
Daniel Binz, Eastern New Mexico University, JR, 2B/1B, Santa Rosa, Calif., Santa Rosa CC

Binz turned in a stellar performance, to lead the Greyhounds to a series split with Abilene Christian last week. For the week, he posted an incredible .750 batting average, along with a 1.083 slugging percentage. Binz his safely in all four games, with three hits in the opener and the third game. In the opener, he had six runs batted in, including a two-run homer. In the third game of the series, he batted three-for-four, with a double, two runs scored an two RBIs.

James Black, Texas A&M University - Kingsville, JR, 3B, Spring, Texas, Klein Collins HS
Black exploded this weekend at Tarleton State after going over a month without a hit. He went 8-for-12 in the final three games of the series after making an out in a pinch-hitting appearance in the first game. He went 2-for-3 with two runs and a home run in an 8-1 win in Game 2. In the second game of the doubleheader he went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI’s in a 7-5 win. In the final game of the series, he went 4-for-6 with a run scored, a double and four runs batted in. He also handled eight chances without an error at third base.

PITCHERS
Dylan Boss, University of the Incarnate Word, FR, Pitcher, Boerne, Texas

Boss controlled the series opener against Cameron, holding the Aggies to just one hit in six innings.  He faced 20 batters with 10 strikeouts to shutout the Aggies in a 5-2 Cardinal win.

Jake Feckley, Angelo State University, SO, RHP, Wylie, Texas, Wylie HS
Feckley struck out seven West Texas A&M batters in a complete-game game win over the conference’s top hitting team last Saturday. Feckley, who walked only one batter, held the Buffs to a .259 batting average and didn’t allow a run after the first inning in the Rams’ first win of the series.

28. Texas A&M-Kingsville - enter poll after sweeping Tarleton State

Other teams of interest - St. Edwards (another common opponent of several LSC teams) is just outside the rankings, and former LSC member Southeastern Oklahoma is also in the receiving votes category.
