LSC Baseball: League race is heating up - LSC Office
West Texas A&M and Angelo State are tied atop the Lone Star Conference baseball standings. Both the Buffaloes and Rams split their league series last week with Texas A&M-Kingsville and Tarleton State, respectively. Incarnate Word took three games in a weather shortened series with Eastern New Mexico, and Abilene Christian and Cameron split its four-game set.
This week’s schedule includes midweek non-conference games, followed by a full schedule of conference action. Each LSC series includes a 9-inning game Friday, a 7x7 doubleheader Saturday and 9-inning contest Sunday. The overall LSC Champion will be the team(s) with the best winning percentage in regular-season conference games, while the winner of the postseason championship will be recognized as LSC Tournament Champion and receive the league’s automatic qualification into the NCAA postseason. The championship will be played May 5-8 in San Angelo, Texas.
LSC baseball teams are 166-134 overall this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the LSC is currently 38-32 overall including 16-16 combined versus Heartland Conference teams, 20-15 opposed to the Great American Conference and 2-1 against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).
DIAMOND PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
HITTERS
Lee Neumann, Angelo State University, JR, Center field, Brenham, Texas, Brenham HS
Neumann pounded out 12 hits in 16 at-bats for a .750 batting average in the Rams’ series split at Tarleton State last weekend. The junior had seven singles, two doubles, two triples and a home run. He has tied the Angelo State single-season record with seven triples and now leads the Rams with a .378 season average and 33 RBI. For good measure, he also scored 10 runs, had two walks and stole two bases against the Texans.
Chuck Duarte, Abilene Christian University, JR, 2B, El Paso, Texas, Franklin HS
Duarte led ACU at the plate this past weekend at Cameron, batting a staggering .571 vs. the Aggies with five runs, five extra-base hits and seven RBI. Three of Duarte’s RBI came during a 3 for 5 performance in game two’s 17-13 win. Duarte’s solo home run served as ACU’s final run of the game scored in the seventh, and earlier he had a RBI single and sacrifice fly. In game four’s 13-10 decision, Duarte put ACU on the board first with a two-run double, and then added a second as part of a four-run eighth inning that helped the Wildcats erase a 10-6 deficit. Duarte recorded ACU’s lone hit - a double - in a one-hitter pitched by Cameron’s Clay Vanderlaan during Friday’s game one.
PITCHERS
Dylan Boss, University of the Incarnate Word, FR, Pitcher, Boerne, Texas, Boerne HS
Boss continued to establish himself as a key part of the Incarnate Word rotation and bullpen with two appearances in three games this weekend. On the road against the Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico, Boss earned a win with a four-inning relief appearance that saw him walk three batters and give up three hits – but surrender no runs and strike out eight of the 17 batters he faced. Boss would then earn his third save of the year on Sunday, pitching two innings of run-free ball. He allowed just one hit, walked no one and strike out two ENMU batters. In all this weekend, Boss had a 0.00 earned-run average and opposing batters were .200 against him.
Brady Rodriguez, Abilene Christian University, SO, Pitcher, Plymouth, Mich., Dearborn Divine Child HS
Rodriguez was ACU’s best pitcher during a tough 2-2 weekend at Cameron, going 1-0 through two appearances and 8.1 innings of work. He struck out four, and did not issue a walk nor hit a batter. Rodriguez started game two’s 17-13 loss, but only allowed just one unearned run through 4.0 innings and 53 pitches. He was lifted at the start of the fifth as ACU built a 9-1 lead, unfortunately the bullpen imploded in surrendering 12 additional runs over the final four frames. Rodriguez’ second appearance was in game four as a reliever, and again he silenced the Cameron batters by delivering 4.1 scoreless innings of work with two more Ks. Rodriguez’ effort earned him the win as the Wildcats scored seven times on his behalf to erase a 10-6 deficit. Rodriguez is now 3-0 on the year and is second on the team with a 4.31 ERA.
