The 2012 regular season is in the books
with postseason play on tap for three Lone Star Conference teams. West Texas
A&M claimed a share of league title with a win over Texas A&M-Commerce
to tie Midwestern State, as both teams posted 7-1 league records. The Mustangs
earned their third title in the last four years, while the Buffs won their fifth
crown and first since three straight from 2005-07.
The LSC won the
inaugural GSC-LSC First and Ten Challenge with a 6-4 advantage in the 10-game
series including MSU’s win over West Georgia last week. The LSC outscored the
GSC, 315-284, for an average score of 32-28 with five of the contests decided by
seven points or less. The 10 games included: Valdosta State at Angelo State
(VSU 43-10); Abilene Christian at Delta State (ACU 34-28); Midwestern State at
West Alabama (MSU 42-27); Delta State at Tarleton State (DSU 38-35); North
Alabama at Texas A&M-Kingsville (UNA 21-16); West Texas A&M at West
Georgia (WT 52-28); Texas A&M-Kingsville at Valdosta State (VSU 38-31);
Tarleton State at North Alabama (TSU 38-28); West Alabama at Abilene Christian
(ACU 22-16 (OT)); and West Georgia at Midwestern State (MSU 35-17).
LSC
football teams are 48-47 overall this season. The squads are 2-3 combined
versus the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Great Lakes Valley
Conference and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams, which are also in NCAA
Super Regional Four.

Midwestern State and West Texas A&M were selected to represent the Lone Star Conference in the field of 24 teams for the 2012 NCAA Division II Football Championship. The Mustangs (9-1) are the fifth seed in Super Region Four, while the Buffaloes (9-2) are the sixth seed.

No. 4 Indianapolis in the first round on Nov. 17 at 11 a.m. The winner advances
to meet top seed CSU-Pueblo in the second round. WT, who won a share of
the LSC title, faces No. 3 Chadron State in first-round action with kickoff set
for 1 p.m. The victor moves on to play Ashland, the No. 2 seed.

program’s second-ever bowl game. TAMUK defeated Arkansas Tech 45-14 in the 1960
Great Southwest Bowl game in Grand Prairie, Texas.
The Hornets (9-2) won
their first eight games in 2012, before dropping two of three to end the
season. Emporia State, who is making its first postseason appearance since
2003, has played in four bowl games with a 2-2 mark This will be the
first-ever meeting between the two squads.

Mitchell Gale, Abilene Christian University, SR, QB, Alva, Okla., Alva HS
In the final game of his remarkable four-year ACU career, Mitchell Gale completed 25 of 36 passes for 408 yards and two scores as he became the all-time leading passer and total offense leader in both Lone Star Conference and ACU history. ... Gale finished his career with LSC and ACU records for passing completions (931), attempts (1,483), yards (12,109) and total offense (12,177). ... He is second to former ACU teammate Billy Malone in career touchdown passes (114 to 97), but topped Malone for first place in each of the other categories. ... Gale’s effort also makes ACU just the third school in NCAA history (joining Hawai’i and Houston) as the only schools to feature back-to-back starting quarterbacks who have thrown for at least 12,000 career yards. ... Gale threw two long touchdown passes against Incarnate Word: 87 yards to Charcandrick West and 80 yards to Darian Hogg in the second quarter to give his record quest a solid boost. ... His 408-yard effort is tied for the fourth-best single-game effort of his career and gave him 18 career 300-yard passing days, the second-best total in ACU history behind Malone’s 20.

Fenske completed 23 passes and broke the school record for passing yards in a single game with 460 yards in Tarleton’s 54-37 win over Angelo State in the regular-season finale in Stephenville on Saturday. Fenske, who made just his third start ever at starting quarterback, had a 53-yard touchdown strike and a game-long 66-yard touchdown bomb en route to three passing TD’s on the evening.
Chauncey Harris, Midwestern State University, SO, RB, San Antonio, Texas, Converse Judson HS
Harris posted the best rushing game in the Lone Star Conference since 2009 and the best at Midwestern State since 2007 as he rushed for 232 yards and two touchdowns in the No. 9 Mustangs 35-17 win over West Georgia. Harris ran for 169 yards in the second half alone on his way to posting the fourth-best rushing game in MSU history and the best by running back. It was the most yardage by a Midwestern runner since quarterback Daniel Polk ran for 290 yards against Abilene Christian on Nov. 10, 2007. Harris posted touchdown runs of 21 and 31 yards for the Mustangs and added non-scoring runs of 28, 25, 21 and 39 yards as he averaged 14.5 yards on his 16 carries. He also had one pass reception for 12 yards. Harris led the Pony Express ground game to the second-best team rushing effort in school history with 470 yards, the best in the LSC since Eastern New Mexico’s 488 against East Central on Sept. 15, 2007. MSU’s third-leading rusher in total yardage on the season, Harris averages 85.9 yards a game with his 773 yards in nine contests with six touchdowns.

Stephens put together one of the best games of his ACU career Saturday in the Wildcats’ season-ending 24-12 win at Incarnate Word. ... Stephens finished with 14 tackles (11 solo) and one sack for a 19-yard loss as the Wildcat defense limited the Cardinals to just 285 yards of total offense, including just 104 passing yards.

Barnes went 3-for-3 in field goal attempts on Saturday as Tarleton went on to defeat Angelo State 54-37 in Stephenville. The Stephenville native kicked a career-long 47-yard field goal late in the third quarter to give the true freshman 18 field goals on the season to tie the school’s all-time single-season record. Barnes netted 92 total points on the season, going 18-for-20 in FG’s and 38-for-38 in extra point attempts. He finished the season with the third most points scored in a single season at Tarleton.
