Kolo adjusted his route

Kolo Kapanui hopes to prove missing your chances at the big time doesn't mean you can't make it to the NFL. The tight end from Kamehameha had his chances at conventional routes to the pros, first by going to USC in the same freshman class as Matt Leinart, then again two years later when big-name schools recruited him from junior college.
But Kapanui's path took him to West Texas A&M, a small Division II school where his football career was resurrected. Now Kapanui expects to be drafted by an NFL team this weekend as one of the best available tight ends coming out of the college ranks.
Speculation is that Kapanui could go in the sixth or seventh round on Sunday. Pass-catching tight ends are again all the rage, and the 6-foot-3, 270-pound Kapanui fits into that category. He turns 25 in November.

NFL Draft Challenge: The Name Game
There was a time in high school when my friend Brian and I were fairly obsessed with NFL Mock Drafts. We spent many an April day in the computer labs studying players and positions, anticipating what team would select who come draft day.
Nothing got us more excited, though, then seeing some of the names of schools of potential draft picks. A few years ago, a player from Mars Hill College caught our eye – not because of his 40 time or his bench press reps, but because he went to a school called MARS HILL!!! Better yet, I think the Bungals ended up drafting him, too.
So who are some of the top players from schools you’ve probably never heard of? Here’s my list of this years potential draftees:

Small school stars dream big before NFL draft
They are a small army of ones.
As in one here, one there, scattered well beyond the interstates on the football map. The ones chasing their NFL dreams, hoping someone, anyone, will just take a chance.
"But really, you only need one team, one person, really," San Diego Chargers and former University of Northern Colorado receiver Vincent Jackson said. "One coach, one scout, one general manager, just one person in one place who believes in what you did.

The Lessons of '98
Matt Hasselbeck had been invited to the 1998 NFL scouting combine after his senior season, so the Boston College quarterback began to wonder why he hadn't heard about travel details as the annual football job fair approached. When he called a league official to inquire about his itinerary, there was an awkward silence. Seems that Hasselbeck was the lowest-rated of the 16 invited senior quarterbacks, and after a junior declared for the draft, Hasselbeck's invitation was rescinded. No one had bothered to tell him.
"Who's the junior?" Hasselbeck asked.
"Ryan Leaf," he was told.
