LSC Volleyball Championship field set

The field is set for the annual Lone Star Conference Volleyball Championship, which begins Thursday in Canyon, Texas.

No. 6 West Texas A&M earned the right to host the event as the league’s regular season champion with a flawless 13-0 record. The Lady Buffs lost just one set in conference play. The eight-team, single-elimination tournament consists of four first-round matches on Thursday, followed by two semifinal games on Friday evening and the championship match on Saturday night.

The top eight teams in the LSC will compete for the 2009 conference title. In addition to winning the conference crown, the LSC champions will receive the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Division II Championship tournament.

All the championship games will be aired live via internet video streaming HERE. The webcasts are available free of charge. Each webcast includes both video and audio, with viewers needing only a computer with a high-speed DSL or cable modem connection to the internet. Veteran broadcaster Chris Needham has the call for all the games.

Action starts on Thursday at 12 p.m. with No. 3 Angelo State against No. 6 Texas Woman’s followed by No. 2 Abilene Christian versus No. 7 Texas A&M-Kingsville at 2:30 p.m., No. 4 Texas A&M-Commerce against No. 5 Central Oklahoma at 5 p.m. and No. 1 WTAMU versus No. 8 Midwestern State at 7:30 p.m.

WTAMU won the 2008 LSC volleyball championship with a 3-2 victory over ACU in Canyon, Texas.

LSC Volleyball Players of the Week
OFFENSIVE
Kristen Wilson, Central Oklahoma, Jr., OH, Moore, Okla./Christian Heritage

Wilson led UCO to two clutch wins to end the season that enabled the Bronchos to move up to fifth in the final league standings in clinching a berth in the LSC Championship. The junior outside hitting hit a sizzling .349 in the two matches with 35 kills and just six errors in 83 attacks while adding 19 digs, four blocks and two service aces. She had 16 kills and 11 digs in a three-set sweep of Cameron before collecting 19 kills and eight digs in a season-ending four-set win over Midwestern State.

Alyson Harlan, Texas Woman’s, Jr., OH, Payne Springs, Texas, Eustace
Helped the Pioneers to a 2-0 record and clinch a spot in the 2009 LSC Championship for the seventh consecutive season. Led the team with 4.75 kills, 3.38 digs, six service aces and 47 points in two games. Posted a team-high 24 kills and 20 digs in a five-set victory over Southeastern Oklahoma and a team-high 14 kills in a three-set win against East Central.

DEFENSIVE
Ginger Gowen, Central Oklahoma, So., L, Edmond, Okla./Santa Fe

Gowen led UCO’s defensive efforts in two season-ending wins that gave the Bronchos a fifth-place league finish. She had 22 digs in a three-set sweep of Cameron and followed with a 20-dig outing in a four-set win over Midwestern State.

Lauren Beville, West Texas A&M, Fr., L, Hereford, Texas/Hereford
Beville has grown throughout the season, becoming more and more comfortable as the Lady Buffs’ starting libero. She has one of her best weeks of the season last week as she led the team in digs with 40 for an average of 5.71 digs per set. She did not have a reception error on serves. She also contributed two assists and two service aces. This season, Beville leads the team in digs with 473 for an average of 3.78 digs per set. She is also only 38 digs away from joining the WT record books for digs in a season, an impressive feat as a freshman.

SETTER
Ijeoma Moronu, Abilene Christian, Jr., S, Fort Worth, Texas/Paschal High School
Moronu led the Wildcats to a 2-0 record last week as ACU ran its winning streak to 14 matches entering the LSC Championship. ... In a 3-0 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville last Thursday, Moronu had 27 assists, 10 digs and six kills. ... In Saturday’s regular-season finale, Moronu led ACU to a 3-1 win over Tarleton State with 54 assists, two kills, nine digs and one block.

Alex Woolsey, Angelo State, Fr., S, Plano, Texas/Plano East HS
Woolsey helped guide the ‘Belles to two sweeps last week, entending their conference winning streak to eight matches in the process. Woolsey averaged 7.00 assists and 2.33 digs per set in ASU’s 6-2 offense and nearly notched her 10th double-double of the season. In Saturday’s sweep of Texas A&M-Kingsville, Woolsey had 19 assists and added nine digs. On Thursday, Woolsey had 23 assists, five digs and a pair of aces in a sweep of Tarleton State.
