Going for a sweep
As the No. 1 seed, West Texas A&M plays host to the Lone Star Conference Women's Soccer Championship beginning today at The Pitch on WT's campus. The top two seeds in the six-team, single-elimination tournament - WT and No. 2 Central Oklahoma - receive first-round byes.
The Lady Buffs (13-2-2 overall) earned the top seed by finishing first in the conference's regular-season standings (7-2-1) for the second consecutive season. WT led the league in goals per game (2.47) and fewest goals allowed (.40).
"One of the goals for us coming into the year was to repeat as regular-season champions," WT coach Butch Lauffer said. "We were able to accomplish that. Getting that first-round bye is important. There is no doubt it is an advantage."
ACU, Reese open LSC soccer tourney play today
Jordan Reese heard the rumors about Abilene Christian possibly getting a women’s soccer team all throughout her years at Abilene High. She didn’t pay them any mind, and she didn’t expect ACU to ever play soccer when she enrolled at the school in 2004. In fact, Reese was resigned to giving up competitive soccer when she entered school at ACU. She was a little burned out of sports at the time. But the following year, the girl who started playing soccer at age 5 with the Polka Dots got the itch again.
“My sophomore year, I thought about transferring to play somewhere else,” she said. “Just the relationships I formed at ACU and the community that ACU is drew me back in. I didn’t want to leave. I stayed at ACU because of the campus and the university with no intention of playing soccer anywhere else.”
LSC to air Soccer Championship games live
RICHARDSON, Texas - The Lone Star Conference Soccer Championship starting tomorrow will be shown live via internet video streaming online here, league officials announced. All the championship games are going to be aired live, starting with first-round action on Thursday, November 5, at The Pitch in Canyon, Texas
Webcasts of each game are available free of charge. Each webcast includes both video and audio, with viewers needing only a computer with a high-speed DSL or cable modem connection to the internet. Veteran broadcaster Chris Needham has the call for all the games.

Lone Star Conference Soccer weekly release (11/4/09)
The 2009 Lone Star Conference women’s soccer championship kicks off tomorrow in Canyon, Texas. West Texas A&M, 13-2-2 overall and 7-2-1 in the LSC, is the top seed for the six-team, single elimination conference championship. The Lady Buffs won its second consecutive and fifth overall LSC crown in 2008. Central Oklahoma also earned a first-round bye as the runner-up with a 7-3 league record.
The championship begins on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 12 p.m. with No. 3 Texas Woman’s playing No. 6 Texas A&M-Commerce. The 2:30 p.m. game matches No. 4 Midwestern State against No. 5 Abilene Christian.
The TWU/A&M-C winner advances to play UCO at 12 p.m. on Friday, while the MSU/ACU victor plays WTAMU at 2:30 p.m. The Friday winners get a day off before playing on Sunday at 1 p.m. for the LSC Championship and an automatic bid into the NCAA Division II tournament.

MEN’S OFFENSIVE
Craig Sutherland, Midwestern State, So., F, Edinburgh, Scotland/George Watson’s College Sutherland scored two goals to lead the Mustangs to a 2-0 win over NAIA St. Thomas Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field. The sophomore striker from Edinburgh, Scotland notched goals in the 8th and 66th minute to push his season goal count to four. Sutherland had managed a goal or an assist in six-straight matches before failing to get on the board in a 4-1 win over Northeastern State on Sunday.
MEN’S DEFENSIVE
Brian Martinez, Midwestern State, Sr., D, Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS Martinez played a key role in organizing a defense which allowed nine shots and just two on goal while helping No. 9 Midwestern State to a pair of home wins over St. Thomas and Northeastern State to clinch a share of the Lone Star Conference championship. The Mustangs limited St. Thomas to five shots while notching their 12th shutout of the season on Friday before limiting Northeastern State to four shots in a 4-1 win on Sunday. MSU leads the nation with a 0.28 team goals against average and a 0.71 shutout percentage.
WOMEN’S OFFENSIVE
Kelsey Hill, Midwestern State, So., F, Wichita Falls, Texas/Rider HS
Hill scored two times in a span of nine minutes to lift Midwestern State to a 3-0 win over Abilene Christian Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field. The sophomore striker forced a turnover in the ACU defensive half and converted a one-on-one opportunity with Wildcat goalkeeper Crissy Lawson in the 56th minute, then finished a give-and-go with Brittany O’Neal for another goal in the 65th minute to put the match away for the Mustangs. Hill now has eight goals this season to lead the Mustangs.
WOMEN’S DEFENSIVE
Natalie Holovach, Texas Woman’s, Jr., D, Fort Worth, Texas/Marcus HS
Holovach helped the team post a shutout against Central Oklahoma, costing them the regular season title. She was the leader on defense, helping the Pioneers to 1-0-1 record in two games last week. The six conference wins are the most in the TWU soccer history.
WOMEN’S GOALKEEPER
Nori Morgan, Texas Woman’s, Jr., GK, Plano, Texas/Plano East HS
Morgan recorded six saves in 1-1 tie against Southwestern Oklahoma and then posted 11 saves in an upset win at Central Oklahoma, 2-0. She recorded her sixth shutout of the season against the Bronchos, costing them the regular season title.
