Wake-up call too late for Javelinas
As far as attention-getters go, last week’s loss at Abilene Christian was a big one for Texas A&M-Kingsville.
“I think it was our biggest wake-up call yet because playing on the field with them we could’ve beaten them,” Javelinas defensive end Mike Talamantez said of the 47-35 setback. “We just allowed them to keep getting on us.”
The question now is whether that wake-up call came in time to salvage the Javelinas’ hopes of a Lone Star Conference championship and a spot in the NCAA Division II playoffs.

The Abilene Christian University football team finds itself in a must-win game for the second straight week and Fred Thompson, a starting defensive back for the Wildcats, wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I’d rather play a do-or-die game,” said Thompson, a junior. “Everybody gels together better. Our backs are against the wall, so we have to play hard.”
No. 12 ACU faces No. 9 Midwestern State at 1 p.m. today in a Lone Star Conference game at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls.
It’s the regular-season finale for both teams. The winner gets into the playoffs while the loser is likely out — especially Midwestern State.
Mustangs face Wildcats with playoffs at stake
While the Midwestern State Mustangs have done a good job of buying into head coach Bill Maskill’s philosophy about not looking ahead — “The game against (pick an opponent) is the most important game because it’s the next one on the schedule” — they all knew it was there.
And even though the Abilene Christian Wildcats no longer have the No. 1 target on their backs, the game is just as important — if not more important — than it ever was.
As a result, when the No. 9 Mustangs and the No. 12 Wildcats meet this afternoon in Memorial Stadium, a spot in the NCAA Division II playoffs is on the line.

1st and goal: With a 9-1 record and a No. 7 national ranking, the Texans have plenty of motivation, not to mention the Buffs have knocked them out of postseason consideration four seasons in a row. Despite their 5-5 record, the Buffs also have goals. A fifth straight win over TSU would clinch a share of the LSC South title, creating a logjam for first place among as many as four teams.

Javelinas, Rams series has plenty of memorable moments
Today’s matchup between No. 17 Texas A&M-Kingsville and Angelo State will be the 43rd meeting between the two schools.
Only Abilene Christian (48) has played Angelo State more times .
Since 1986, ASU and TAMUK have ended the regular season against each other every year but 2000. Several conference championships and playoff berths have been decided in that final week when the rivals faced each other.
This will be the last year the two teams meet in the regular-season finale.
With Incarnate Word joining the Lone Star Conference next fall, the schedules will change and the Rams and Javelinas will meet earlier in the season.
