ACU headlines All-LSC South Division Awards with 10 first-team selections
RICHARDSON, Texas –Abilene Christian, who won a share of the Lone Star Conference South Division title, had 10 first-team picks and two individual award winners recognized Thursday when the annual football awards were announced by LSC officials. The Wildcats had five players on the top offense and five more on the first-team defense, plus two-time Offensive Lineman of the Year Tony Washington and Co-Defensive Back of the Year Tony Harp.
LSC co-champion Tarleton State had 14 players honored on the first- and second-teams with six on offense and eight on defense including Linebacker of the Year Marcus Phillips. Midwestern State and Texas A&M-Kingsville, who earned LSC titles with 9-2 conference marks, each had 10 athletes on the top two teams. The Mustangs and Javelinas both had six on offense and four on defense.
MSU had four individual award winners with the Co-Offensive Back of the Year Zack Eskridge, Receiver of the Year Andy Tanner, Co-Defensive Back Micah Hill and Co-Coach of the Year Bill Maskill. MSU, TAMUK, Tarleton and ACU were each selected for the NCAA Division II playoffs and are playing in first-round games Nov. 14. The Mustangs (9-2) are the third seed in Super Region Four and will host the No. 6 Wildcats (8-3) in Wichita Falls at 12 p.m. The Javelinas (9-2) are also hosting a first-round game as the fourth seed, with the No. 5 Texans (9-2) traveling to Kingsville for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
West Texas A&M, who will represent the league in the Kanza Bowl on December 5th, had nine players represented on the first and second squads with four offensive and five defensive choices. The Buffaloes Keithon Flemming was named Co-Offensive Back of the Year, while Eugene Sims earned his second straight Defensive Lineman of the Year award. Angelo State had four second-teamers including Freshman of the Year Dakarai Pecikonis. The Rams Dale Carr was Co-Coach of the Year. Eastern New Mexico had three honorees with one on the first-team and two on the second-team.
Overall, 113 student-athletes were recognized by the LSC’s postseason awards program, with 34 players named to the first team, 33 on the second team and another 46 gaining honorable mention. The all-conference honors were selected by the head coaches of the seven South Division teams.

All-LSC North Division Football honors announced
RICHARDSON, Texas – Lone Star Conference North Division champion Texas A&M-Commerce had eight first-team selections and four individual award winners recognized Thursday when the annual football awards were announced by LSC officials.
The Lions won its first outright divisional title since 1990 with a flawless 5-0 record. A&M-C had four offensive and four defensive first-teamers including two-time Co-Offensive Lineman of the Year R.J. Brisbon, Defensive Lineman of the Year William Green, Linebacker of the Year Cory Whitfield and Coach of the Year Guy Morriss.
Southeastern Oklahoma had 17 first- and second-team picks with nine on offense and eight on defense. Daniel Nichols was the Receiver of the Year for the Savage Storm. Central Oklahoma had the most first-teamers with nine plus three second-teamers as well as Co-Offensive Lineman of the Year Luke Sapolu, Offensive Back of the Year Jason Palmer and Defensive Back of the Year Giorgio Durham. Northeastern State totaled 12 first and second-team choices plus Freshman of the Year Michael Yoder. East Central added six players to the top two teams, while Southwestern Oklahoma had five.
Overall, 78 student-athletes were recognized by the LSC’s postseason awards program, with 31 players named to the first team, 29 on the second team and 18 earning honorable mention. The all-conference honors were selected by the head coaches of the six North Division teams.

LSC Football Academic Honors announced
RICHARDSON, Texas – Southwestern Oklahoma quarterback Steve Day and Midwestern State quarterback Zack Eskridge topped the 2009 Lone Star Conference football academic awards, which were announced by league officials on Thursday.
Day, a senior from Edmond, Okla., picked up his second-straight LSC North Academic Player of the Year award with a 3.67 grade point average in Exercise Science. This year, he broke his own single-season school records for passes attempted and completed. He also owns the Bulldogs’ career passing records for completions, attempts, yards and touchdowns.
Eskridge, a junior from Rowlett, Texas, has a 3.61 GPA in Radiology and is a 2009 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District first team member. He is the NCAA Division II pass efficiency leader this season at 184.85 and set a NCAA Division II single-game record when he completed 24 of 25 passes in MSU’s 38-7 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on October 17. He set the Mustangs’ single-season records in passing yards, completions, efficiency rating, touchdown passes and completion percentage this year, in addition to holding the school’s career marks for TD passes and completion percentage.
The two lead the list of 22 players named to the LSC All-Academic Teams, which recognize both academic and athletic achievement. The All-Academic Teams are voted upon by the league’s sports information directors. To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes need at least a 3.30 GPA and must be at least a sophomore. All qualifying student-athletes not voted to the All-Academic Team are then placed on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
A total of 50 players were honored for their academic achievements, and all 13 of the LSC’s football teams were represented. Five schools, Northeastern State, Southeastern Oklahoma, Central Oklahoma, East Central and Texas A&M-Commerce each placed two players on the North Division All-Academic team, in addition to SWOSU’s one. League and division co-champion MSU led the South Division team with three selections, while Eastern New Mexico, Angelo State and Abilene Christian each earned two, and Tarleton State and Texas A&M-Kingsville rounded out the squad with one apiece. In addition to Day, the North Division All-Academic team was comprised of SOSU’s Jerrod Temple and Welton Johnson, NSU’s Jared Homer and Joe Kok, UCO’s Tucker Cason and Matt Jackson, ECU’s Trevor Suffal and Joshua Maldanado and A&M-C’s Blake Patton and T.J. Nielsen. With Eskridge on the South Division All-Academic team were teammates J.J. Ford and Tyler Maner, ENMU’s Nathan Uland and Karlton Graves, ASU’s Josh Neiswander and Ian Ritchey, ACU’s Eric Edwards and Emery Dudensing, TSU’s Dustin Washburn and TAMUK’s Jorge Guerra.
