Defense shines in ECU scrimmage

Ada — East Central University might have the reigning Lone Star Conference North Offensive Player of the Year in junior-to-be quarterback Marcus Johnson. But the Tigers’ new 3-4 defense was the undisputed star of Saturday’s first spring scrimmage.
After being pushed around a bit on the first couple of drives in the 90-minutes session, the defense — trying to bounce back from a 2007 campaign in which it was the worst in the LSC — re-grouped and allowed just eight first downs on the final 12 possession by the offense, with four of those first downs coming on the final drive of the afternoon.
Johnson, who threw for over 2,500 yards during his sophomore campaign, completed just 7-of-15 passes for 86 yards, and he was intercepted twice (by cornerback Derrick Suggs on his sixth pass of the day and by linebacker Tait Langston on his final attempt — after it was deflected.)
