Ada — The East Central University football team appeared to end spring practice four months ago with a little more swagger than most observers would have expected from a team that won just five of 26 games the past two seasons. Former Ada High All-American lineman Craig Roark said recently that the team’s apparent change in attitude — along with a group of talented new players — could signal a change in the Tigers’ football fortunes this fall.
“I’m pumped ... we’re all pumped,” said Roark, who transferred to ECU from Nebraska last summer but missed the 2007 campaign after breaking his foot in his first preseason practice. “Most of the time you dread fall camp, but this year everybody was looking forward to it. We’re ready, we’re excited, and we’re expecting a good season.”
ECU’s 2008 squad resembles an Ada class reunion, with Craig Roark, younger brother Chad (also an All-American for the Cougars and a transfer from Nebraska) and their former teammate, Ty Gower (who returned to Ada after two years, including a redshirt season, at Southeastern), having transferred to join guard Justin Nail (a two-year starter for the Tigers) and freshmen Willy Gould, Steffan Jones and Josh Hopstein on this year’s roster.
