Javelinas win with Texans game plan
The victories keep coming for Texas A&M-Kingsville’s football team. And they keep getting bigger. Big win No. 3 came Saturday night when the ninth-ranked Javelinas utilized an opportunistic defense and a so-so offense to thwart No. 11 Tarleton State 34-20, a deceiving point total that escalated late.

The Javelinas (6-0) proved to be at least the equal to the Texans’ fourth-ranked defensive unit in NCAA Division II, coming up with six turnovers and limiting the Lone Star Conference’s top rushing offense to 112 yards, 92 fewer than they had been churning.

“They got big this evening, came through when we needed them, made some big plays,” A&M-Kingsville coach Bo Atterberry said.

Coming off a 23-17 overtime road win the week before at West Texas A&M, a team they hadn’t beaten in four seasons, the Javelinas backed that with a sound defense and an offense that struck when it needed in the Lone Star Conference South Division opener.

“I think you could look at both of them as big wins. West Texas was a big win. We talked about it earlier. Three of the last four conference championships came from there and we had a 10-, 12-hour bus trip, however long it was,” said Atterberry, whose Javelinas opened the season with a 28-17 win over then-ranked No. 4 Delta (Miss.) State. “They all run together at some point. That was huge. It helped us come back home and play with a lot of effort and confidence. It’s probably what pushed us through to the end of this game. It was a big test last week. You’re playing into overtime and all that stuff,” he said. “The guys showed a lot of heart and stayed together and we’ve got to continue to do so.”

Rams ranked No. 23 in poll
Saturday’s homecoming game at San Angelo Stadium between Angelo State and Abilene Christian became a matchup of two nationally ranked teams on Monday.

The American Football Coaches Association released its weekly Division II poll and the Rams made their season debut in the rankings at No. 23. It is the first time since the final poll of the 2005 season that ASU has been ranked in the Top 25.

The Rams were ranked as high as No. 19 that season, the last year they advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs.

The Rams (5-1) are 4-0 in LSC play and 2-0 in LSC South Division action for the first time since 2001. They are off to their best start since 2005 when they started the season 8-1.

Javelinas' win doesn't result in national ranking change
Despite beating the 11th-ranked team in the country, Texas A&M-Kingsville remained 9th in the latest American Football Coaches Association Division II poll Monday.

The Javelinas' 34-20 win over Tarleton State, which only fell to No. 15, did increase the points Texas A&M-Kingsville earned from 433 to 438, but with no losses in the top 10, only two teams flipped flopped spots (Bloomsburg fell to 5th, Central Washington goes to 4th). Grand Valley State (Mich.) is still ranked No. 1, followed by Abilene Christian and North Alabama.

Along with Abilene Christian, Texas A&M-Kingsville and Tarleton State, the Lone Star Conference is represented by Midwestern State (18th) and for the first time since 2001, Angelo State (23rd).

Incredible rally UIW's Massoni a start
Redshirt freshman Eric Massoni will start at quarterback for Incarnate Word this week when the Cardinals go for their first winning streak. UIW hosts East Central (Okla.) University at 2 p.m. Saturday at Benson Stadium.

Massoni, who in recent weeks earned the backup role after starting the season third on the depth chart, came off the bench last week to lead the Cardinals to an improbable, come-from-behind victory in Oklahoma. UIW trailed by 28 points in the third quarter against Oklahoma Panhandle State when Massoni replaced starter Thomas Specia. He led five scoring drives in nine possessions to fuel a 38-35 victory in overtime.

Massoni passed for 151 yards and two touchdowns, including a tying 12-yard TD strike to Dominic Hamilton with about a minute left to force OT. He also ran for a score.

“He'll start because he played a great game,” UIW coach Mike Santiago said of the Leander native. “It's like any other position — somebody plays that good, well, guess what? You play. Personnel is a constant evaluation.”

Lady Buffs remain No. 6
The West Texas A&M Lady Buffs stayed at No. 6 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association top 25 poll, released Monday. The Lady Buffs (18-3, 4-0 Lone Star Conference) were tied with Emporia State at sixth last week, but broke the tie after WT beat Emporia State last weekend at the Holiday Inn Lady Blues Fall Classic in Topeka, Kan.

WT also lost to No. 7 Washburn, which hosted the tournament, and beat No. 21 Truman State. The Lady Buffs return to LSC play Thursday, hosting Southwestern Oklahoma State at 7 p.m. in the WT Fieldhouse.

Midwestern tied for 5th at Cheddar's UCO Classic
OKLAHOMA CITY — The Midwestern State womens golf team came in tied for fifth Monday in the opening round of the Cheddar’s UCO Classic at the Par-70 Lincoln Park Golf Course. Five Mustangs carded scores in the 70s with Taylor Klutts leading the group with a low of 73.
