Women’s Soccer Recap - Week 5

The fifth week of action (finally) opens conference play, with most teams booking one game in conference play. (Central OK played two conference matches, while Midwestern has yet to meet a conference opponent). The surprise result of the weekend has to be Eastern New Mexico’s defeat of WT A&M, which resulted in West Texas dropping from the national rankings. Midwestern continues to climb, this week checking in as #10 nationally, another school first. St Edward’s, a common opponent to many LSC teams lands the #12 spot, Incarnate Word is 19th.

Regional Rankings :

1) Midwestern
2) St Edwards
3) Incarnate Word
4) WT A&M
5) Central OK
6) Truman
7) Northwest Missouri
8) Nebraska – Omaha
9) Southwest Baptist
10) Angelo State

Player of the Week awards are :

Offensive – Brittni Walker, (Cen OK) . Freshman recorded a hat trick and two assists for the week.

Defensive – Michelle Sumner (ENM) anchored the defense that put up two shutouts this past week – one against #6 WT A&M.

Goal Keeper – Sierra Cardenas (EMN) two shutouts for the weekend between the posts.

Team by team ;

West Texas A&M . The Buffs did not begin conference play in the fashion they wanted to, dropping a 1-0 contest to Eastern New Mexico in Portales.

This week brings Central Oklahoma and SWOSU to Canyon. Will the Buffs find their mojo? Central has been playing well lately, SWOSU put together a strong showing against Central on Tuesday, could be an interesting weekend at The Pitch.

A&M Commerce. Tuesday the Lady Lions opened their conference play against TWU, handing them a 1-0 loss in Commerce. Devon Herrman scored in the 27th minute, Commerce held an edge in shots 12-8.

Sunday the Lions take on #10 Midwestern in Wichita Falls. This will undoubtedly be a game of consequence in the conference standings. Can Commerce build on last years success in the national arena?

Central Oklahoma. Last Thursday the Broncho’s defeated ranked NAIA opponent Oklahoma Christian 1-0 for their sixth consecutive shutout. Katelyn Cropp scored in the 27th from a corner. Central held an 11-6 edge in shots. Sunday Northeastern was a 4-1 victim in Tahlequah. Frosh Brittni Walker put up a hat trick, which helped earn her the Offensive POW award. Northeastern scored first in the 5th minute, but four unanswered goals sunk them. Shot advantage was 19-8 Central. Tuesday SWOSU came to town and Central recorded an unenthusiastic 1-0 win, however this does provide them with a 2-0 conference record.

This week the Broncho’s need to bring their “A” game, first for their contest with WT A&M in Canyon, then on to Portales to see if ENM is for real. Friday’s match in Canyon should be very interesting.

Midwestern. The Mustangs are enjoying their very first #10 national ranking, Friday’s 7-0 defeat of A&M International added another shutout to their record. Midwestern outshot the overwhelmed International side 32-5. Sunday’s match against Incarnate Word (#19) was a 0-0 2OT slugfest between two very good teams. Midwestern suffered injuries and packed it in through the overtimes to preserve the tie. Midwestern had no shots during either OT period.

Friday TWU comes to Wichita Falls trying to get back on the winning side. This is probably the wrong place to look for a win.

ACU. The Wildcats squeezed out two OT victories over the weekend. Friday the Cats visited Angelo for the conference opener for both squads. After a scoreless first half Lyndsey Womack split the defense for a goal in the 54th. Brandie DeBacker answered in the 63rd, heading in a ball off a corner kick. Angelo did not take a shot, however, in either OT period. A set piece and resulting scrum resulted in an ACU golden goal. Sunday UT Brownsville visited Abilene and played to a 0-0 draw in regulation. Lexi Stirling (another freshman) scored the 97th minute winner.

Friday brings Northeastern to Abilene, and ECO follows on Sunday.

Angelo State. ACU snapped the Rambelles six game win streak in San Angelo.

ECO and Northeastern visit San Angelo as the Rambelles look to begin another win streak.

East Central Oklahoma. Friday USAO lost in Ada 4-3 despite a 22-9 shot advantage.
The Tigers were very efficient, scoring three on just nine shots. Tuesday ECO traveled to rival Northeastern but came out on the wrong end of a 2-1 2OT game. ECO scored in the first half, Northeastern equalized in the 50th and ended the game on a set piece goal.

This weekend the Tigers are in West Texas to face ACU and Angelo State.

TWU. Lost to D1 TCU 0-4 in Fort Worth for the last non-conference game.
Tuesday lost to A&M Commerce 1-0 to begin conference play.

Friday the Pioneers are in Wichita Falls to test #10 Midwestern. Non-conference play has not been kind to the Pioneers, but one of the beauties of the LSC is anyone CAN beat anyone else. (how many people would have picked ENM over WT A&M?) Only six goals scored through eight games……time to find some offense.

Eastern New Mexico. Defeated #6 WT A&M to begin their conference campaign. Held a 12-11 shot advantage in the game. Also shut out New Mexico Highlands 3-0, using just 8 shots for the three goals. The week earned two POW awards for Zia’s, Michelle Sumner as Defensive, and GK Sierra Cardenas.

This weekend SWOSU and Central Oklahoma both visit Portales. Friday should improve the Zia’s conference record to 2-0, while Central Oklahoma will prove tougher. Is it possible ENM will be 3-0 in conference play after the weekend ?

Northeastern Oklahoma. Sunday lost to Central OK 1-4. Encouraging start to the game, as the Riverhawks scored in the 5th, but four unanswered goal proved their undoing. Bronchos used 22 players in the contest. Tuesday the Northeastern side bested ECO 2-1 in a 2OT game. Ends the week with a 1-1 conference record.

This week Northeastern tests both ACU and Angelo on the road.

SWOSU. Had an eleven day break before their first conference contest against Central Oklahoma on Tuesday. Unfortunately left Edmond on the wrong end of a 1-0 game.
A one goal loss to one of the conference’s historically strong teams has to be a boost for the Bulldogs.

This weekend visit ENM and West Texas. Could be a long weekend for the Bulldogs.
