ACU climbs poll, makes history
When top-ranked Grand Valley State went down to defeat Saturday, 27-24 at the hands of unranked Hillsdale (Mich.), it started a chain reaction that would eventually create a little bit of history. That loss, accompanied by Abilene Christian’s win over Angelo State, helped the Wildcats ascend to the No. 1 spot in the AFCA Coaches Poll for the first time in school history.

The Wildcats got 23 of 25 first-place votes with No. 2 North Alabama taking the other two votes for the top spot. It also marked the first time a Lone Star Conference team has been on top of the AFCA poll.

Central Oklahoma was atop the NCAA Division II poll for the last three weeks of the regular season in 1998, while Texas A&M-Kingsville held the spot for two weeks at the end of the 1996 regular season. The AFCA poll didn’t begin until 2000.



UCO women's basketball team ranked 11th
Reigning Lone Star Conference North Division champion Central Oklahoma has pulled down the No. 11 spot in the Division II Bulletin preseason women’s basketball poll. The Bronchos of fourth-year head coach Guy Hardaker have three starters and five other letterwinners back from last year’s team that won a school-record 27 games (27-6) and advanced to the Sweet 16 in the national tournament.

Michigan Tech topped the Division II Bulletin rankings, followed by Franklin Pierce, Delta State, Indianapolisand California (Pa.). UCO is the highest-rated Lone Star Conference team in the poll, with West Texas A&M No. 15.

Nicole Anderson Named Head Women's Basketball Coach at Texas A&M-Commerce
President Dr. Dan Jones and athletic director Carlton Cooper announced the hiring of Nicole Anderson as the new head women's basketball coach at Texas A&M University-Commerce on Oct. 13.

ACU wins non-LSC match, stays unbeaten at Moody
Jennie Hutt pounded 13 kills and Ijeoma Moronu had 33 assists as the Abilene Christian remained unbeaten at home with a 25-14, 25-21, 27-25 victory over Dallas Baptist in a nonconference volleyball match Tuesday night at Moody Coliseum.

Angelo St. runners fare well in meet
The Angelo State University cross country teams competed for the final time before the season-ending Lone Star Conference Championships on Oct. 24, as they hosted the ASU Blue and Gold Classic Tuesday afternoon. With both teams coming off second-place finishes in Denton at the North Texas Invitational on Oct. 2, the teams looked to fare well in their final tuneup before the championships in Canyon. The Rambelles performed just as head coach James Reid wanted in the five-kilometer event, placing four runners in the top 10 to win the women’s meet, finishing two points ahead of South Plains College.

“It’s what we needed,” Reid said. “We wanted the kids to run up tight in the front. Our top three have been solid all year long, with Emeline (Crutcher), Brittney (Heath) and Paige (Massingill), and of course they all three ran well again today. And Alyssa (Priest) jumped up there in the top 10. That’s encouraging, and that’s what we need to happen if we want to go into the conference championship and make some noise.”
