Javs to open division play in battle of unbeatens
A&M-Kingsville and its potent offense to host Tarleton St. and its stingy D

KINGSVILLE — It will be one of the marquee matchups in NCAA Division II Saturday night when No. 11 Tarleton State visits No. 9 Texas A&M-Kingsville in a battle of unbeaten Lone Star Conference South Division teams. With the initial and all-important regional rankings due on Monday, the winner is going to be sitting in a much better position than the loser.

The game features an offense in A&M-Kingsville that ranks sixth in the country against a TSU defense that sits ninth. But as last week’s 23-17 overtime thriller against West Texas A&M proved, there still are some “Is” that need dotting and “Ts” that need crossing before the 5-0 Javelinas are ripe for a run at the LSC title and be considered the best.

“It’s hard to find disappointment in a win. But like I told them when we met after the game, it’s not disappointing, it’s just reality that we’ve got some work to do,” third-year Javelinas coach Bo Atterberry said. “I don’t think we came out and played early like we are capable. Again, it’s always across the board. The newspaper doesn’t read anything but Javelinas. Regardless whether you’re an offensive or a defensive players, special teams, we had turnovers, we had penalties, we had this, we had that.

“I’m not disappointed. I was proud as heck of them for continuing to battle. That’s not an easy place to win,” he said. “I don’t think we had anybody on the trip that had ever beaten West Texas, at least in a Javelina uniform that’s for sure. They were a team that felt it was a pretty important win to get. So they were out to get it. Being the first time to travel on a long trip, we could’ve started better. I think they’d all agree to that.”

ACU preview: Wildcats face punchless Tigers
ACU (5-0) vs. East Central (0-4)

HEADLINE No. 2 Wildcats draw winless Tigers in LSC crossover battle

n What’s riding on this game: No. 2 ACU is among four teams still unbeaten in the Lone Star Conference — and all are LSC South Division teams. This is the last LSC crossover game for the Wildcats, and they can’t afford a loss before getting into the meat of South Division play — especially against the weakest team in the LSC.

n Last week: Northeastern State beat East Central 17-7 in a battle of winless teams in the LSC North. Reggie Brown ran for three fourth-quarter touchdowns, as ACU rallied to beat Eastern New Mexico 44-33 in a LSC South game at Shotwell Stadium. ACU beat East Central 66-7 last year in Abilene, and the Wildcats lead the series 5-3. Before last season, the two teams hadn’t met since 2001. when the Tigers beat ACU 37-17 in Ada, Okla.

Tidwell a versatile weapon for Rams
SAN ANGELO, Texas — Last Saturday against then-No. 17 Midwestern State, Angelo State junior Garrett Tidwell returned three kickoffs for 89 yards.

He also caught two passes for 25 yards. And he rushed four times for 35 yards.

In other words, Tidwell is one of the most versatile members of the Rams, who are 4-1 overall and 1-0 in Lone Star Conference play heading into today’s game against Eastern New Mexico (2-3, 0-1) at Blackwater Draw.

Tidwell has done it all despite tendinitis in his knees. The Boyd High School graduate went to Blinn after his senior year of high school and played a season before deciding to put football behind him. He spent two years out of the game but decided to return and has not regretted that decision since.

West Texas A&M comes calling
Football coaches are always saying their upcoming opponent with a losing record is the “best” 0-3 or 1-4 team in the country, conference, etc.

Midwestern State head coach Bill Maskill is no exception, but when he says it about the West Texas A&M Buffaloes this week — he’s probably right.

The Buffs and their 1-4 record will invade Memorial Stadium tonight for a 7:05 Lone Star Conference South Division game against the No. 23 Mustangs and their 4-1 mark.

Both teams are 0-1 in the LSC South.

“They’re the best 1-4 team I’ve seen and may be the best 1-4 team in the country,” Maskill said. “The teams they’ve lost to have all been ranked pretty high, including the No. 1 team in the country (Grand Valley State). This team is more athletic than the one we just played. Their record just doesn’t show it.

“I don’t know what their psyche is right now, but this is supposed to be a rivalry game. If they watch last year’s game (a 42-14 WT win), they ought to feel pretty confident. They’ve had success against us and they think they can do it again. We have to do something to make it a rivalry again.”
