LSC Roundup 10-12

Ranked teams Kingsville, Tarleton rally late for wins
Texas A&M-Kingsville continues to live on the edge, but the Javelinas still are breathing. If not a sigh of relief. The No. 9 Hogs, who beat West Texas A&M in overtime earlier this season, overcame a late 34-21 deficit to beat Texas A&M-Commerce 35-34 in Commerce. Commerce earlier this season came close to upsetting No. 2 Abilene Christian in the Cotton Bowl.

But that drama doesn’t top No. 15 Tarleton’s 31-28 win over No. 18 Midwestern State in Stephenville. Garrett Lindholm booted a school-record 55-yard field goal as time ran out for the Texans’ win. He has just tied the game with a field goal before Midwestern fumbled the kickoff, setting up the Texans with a chance to win.

ACU likely to be No. 1 when Buffs visit
The West Texas A&M Buffaloes could be facing the nation's No. 1 team for the second time this season. The Buffs, with arguably the toughest schedule in NCAA Division II, take on Abilene Christian on Saturday, more than likely the top-ranked team when the polls come out today.
Grand Valley State, the former No. 1 team which beat WT, 37-23, to open the season, fell Saturday to Hillsdale College, 27-24. That should open the door for the undefeated and second-ranked Wildcats to take over the top spot.

"We play No. 1, three, five, 11 ... just add them up," said WT quarterback Taylor Harris, who was 27-of-43 for 371 yards and three scores in the Buffs' 34-24 Wagon Wheel victory against Eastern New Mexico on Saturday. "It is just another game for us. We can't look at it as a national championship game. It is a challenge, and we like it."

"To be the best, you have to beat the best," WT head coach Don Carthel said. "If there is a tougher schedule in America in Division II, I'd like to see it."

Bronchos No. 17 In Cage Poll
Two-time defending Lone Star Conference North Division champion Central Oklahoma has earned a No. 17 ranking in the Division II Bulletin preseason men’s basketball poll.

The Bronchos of eighth-year head coach Terry Evans have seven lettermen back from last year’s 24-6 team that made a second consecutive national tournament appearance.

Brigham Young-Hawaii tops the Division II Bulletin rankings, followed by defending champion Findlay. Southwest Baptist, Cal Poly Pomona and Bellarmine round out the top five. UCO, which has won 52 games the past two years, is the lone league team in the preseason poll.

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Pioneers roll to win over lackluster 'Belles
As good as the Angelo State University volleyball team looked in a sweep of Texas A&M-Commerce on Thursday, the Rambelles looked as bad Saturday against Texas Woman’s University. Just two days removed from ending a six-match losing skid with a resounding Lone Star Conference victory against the Lions, the ‘Belles lost to the Pioneers 25-16, 26-24, 25-22 in front of 257 fans at the Junell Center.

With the loss, ASU fell to 10-12 overall and 2-3 in the LSC. TWU improved to 13-11, 3-3.

“I am really disappointed in our effort,” ASU head coach Chuck Waddington said. “We came out Thursday and played really well, as good as we have played all year. We weren’t even close to matching that. Energy, effort, we were just a totally different team (Saturday).”

Own goal gives Tigers win over unbeaten No. 10 MSU
Juliana Cantu’s crossing pass slipped through the hands of Midwestern State goalkeeper Ashley Meek and was redirected into the goal to provide the difference as East Central upset the 10th-ranked Mustangs 1-0 Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.

“We’ve played around a lot with 1-0 games this year,” MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. “We created a lot of chances, but just couldn’t score.”

The loss was the first of the season for MSU, which fell to 9-1-2 overall and to 3-1 in the Lone Star Conference.

ACU's doubles team getting ready for ITA Tourney
Hutton Jones calls this “real tennis.” On Thursday, the Abilene Christian doubles team of Dina Pavlin and Jaclyn Walker begin play in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Small College Championships in Mobile, Ala. One of eight teams entered in the Division II, Pavlin-Walker open against Sharon Gill-Milena Vuksanovic of Wayne State (Ind.). That’s a 1:30 p.m. match. The winner plays again at 5 p.m.

“This is real tennis, where you battle for every point,” said Jones, ACU’s tennis coach for the past 14 years. “This is more like tennis really is, like is for professionals. There are no easy matches.”
