Women's Soccer - The Race is On

With the season down to the last two weekends of play, the race for the top six positions and resulting conference tourney berths is still wide open – nobody has been mathematically eliminated. It was been a season of surprises, upsets and unexpected results. Some of the more notable examples include:

WT loses to ENM and TWU

Midwestern loses to ECO

ACU loses to SWOSO and beats Central Oklahoma – in the same weekend.

Angelo loses to ECO

SWOSU wins three conference games and still has three to play.

Central Oklahoma, who had not given up more than one goal in any conference game, has ACU score four on them at home.

What is likely to happen?

Current front-runner ACU (16 points) looks strong, but still has WT and Midwestern on the road, not to mention ENM, who has been playing tough.

Central Oklahoma, second with 15 points, has a slightly less challenging schedule - with Midwestern and always tough Commerce left, along with a TWU side that defeated WT recently.

WT and Midwestern both have 12 points. Both could easily run the table. WT has the easier road, with Angelo and ACU at home and NOSU and ECO on the road

Midwestern goes to SWOSU and Central OK, then returns home for ACU and Angelo.

TWU, Commerce and SWOSU are all sitting on nine points. TWU and Commerce could also win out. Commerce plays at ECO and NOSU, then has Central OK and SWOSU at home. TWU (Commerce’s travel partner) has the same schedule. SWOSU’s season could already be judged a success, and they’re at home against Midwestern, TWU and Commerce. Can they add another W?

Angelo, ECO and ENM all have six points. Angelo has the toughest remaining schedule of the three, facing WT, ENM and Midwestern all on the road. ECO gets Commerce and TWU on the road, then has ENM and WT at home. ENM has Angelo and ACU at home, then finishes on the road against ECO and NOSU.

NOSU is the longest shot to make post-season play, with four points currently. The Riverhawks travel to TWU and Commerce, then have WT and ENM at home.

Our Picks.

WT and Midwestern run the table, with WT getting the tourney host nod on a head to head victory, although Midwestern also gets a first round bye.

Central Oklahoma goes 2-1 for the third slot.

Commerce guts up a 3-1 finish for #4 seed.

ACU finishes 1-2 for 5th .

TWU splits 2-2 for the last spot.
