ASU FOOTBALL: Impact freshmen
Last spring, Angelo State University head football coach Dale Carr figured he would have only a couple of freshman contribute to his team this season.
He was way off on that prediction. But he wouldn’t want it any other way.
From offensive line to linebacker and from wide receiver to defensive back, freshmen have made big plays and big contributions to ASU’s success this season.

ACU preview: No. 2 'Cats face No. 23 ASU
What’s riding on this game: The winner stays atop the Lone Star Conference. Both teams go into the game tied with Texas A&M-Kingsville for the overall conference lead. ACU is ranked No. 2 in the nation, and the Rams are ranked No. 23. It’s the first time the two rivals have met with both teams ranked nationally in 12 years. But the national rankings have no bearing on which teams advance to the playoffs. Not so with the NCAA regional rankings, and the Wildcats are ranked No. 1 in the first Super Regional Four rankings that came out Monday. Angelo is No. 7. The top six teams in the region advance to the playoffs, so the Rams have a lot riding on this game.
Javelinas on right path headed to Commerce
The midpoint of the regular season for Texas A&M-Kingsville passed at halftime of last Saturday’s game with Tarleton State. So far, it would be foolish to say that the Javelinas aren’t steered on the correct course to success.
The queries of import now, with Texas A&M-Commerce on the docket this afternoon and some heavyweight Lone Star Conference programs in the offing, is have the ninth-ranked Javelinas generated enough momentum along the way to their 6-0 start to sustain themselves for the balance of the LSC schedule.
“There you go with those crystal ball questions again,” A&M-Kingsville coach Bo Atterberry mused. “I like where we’re at right now, especially coming in off a practice we had (Tuesday). I don’t get any sense that they feel like they’ve achieved anything, or feeling too good about themselves or that they don’t have to go to work to get this thing done.”
Coach turned QB to start Saturday
ADA — When the 2009 football season began, Lucas Peters was the running backs coach on an East Central University football team looking for its school’s first winning season in four years. When the Tigers take the field Saturday afternoon in San Antonio against new Lone Star Conference member Incarnate Word, Peters will be the quarterback on a team looking for its first victory this fall.
As Tim McCarty began his second tour as ECU head football coach, having Peters under center had to seem like the longest of longshots, a virtual impossibility on a team with a senior quarterback — Marcus Johnson — who already owned almost all of the school’s career, single-game and single-season passing records and a junior back-up — Josh Phillips — with a proven track record of his own.
